Upset with the Bush administration's proposed antitrust settlement with Microsoft Corp., Los Angeles programmer Dan Kegel posted a letter to the Justice Department on his Web site. He soon had more than 2,100 co-signers. "It lacks effective enforcement and it fails to prohibit a number of anti-competitive licensing practices," said Kegel, with the approval of private software developers at universities, businesses and government laboratories. "It's taking away the chance for real competition in the operating system market." | ||

I find it interesting. Dan Kegel doesn't even use Microsoft. He's a Linux advocate.
He's not completely unfair, he's one of the few who realized the Mindcraft benchmark pointed to some notable performance problems in the Linux kernel. But exactly how does he expect to be fair to Microsoft when he's not even familiar with the product? Go to www.kegel.com to read more. It's a rather boring website and hard to find information on it, but I it probably works under Netscape 1.0. |

Soda, are you actually trying to suggest that Kegel knows nothing about Windows or Microsoft? Are are you just FUDing like your favorite company?
He has been gainfully employed programming for the Win environment in the past; he continues to write articles addressing Network and Web serving on the Windows platform and kernal and benchmarking issues as well. Obviously, kegel is a *Nix guy, but are you suggesting a *Nix advocate can't possibly know about Windows or just in this case? Even if you are specifically referring to Kegel, he has more experience with Microsoft then half the people you support here. Curious to find out your answer, we should all try to remember it for the next time you try to comment on Linux, MacOS, or any other system. |

Jerk, well actually yes. I've had email communications with Kegel and pointed out some of the blatant misinformation on his website. Most specifically with regards to the NT versus Unix benchmarks. He admits to not being familiar with NT, and his claim is that he only reposts or links to the information. He's not claiming it to be completely accurate.
I also went through his letter and found a number of glaring mistakes and over exagerrations. But such is usually the case with Linux advocates and it's not worth getting hung up about. BTW, I only make comments about stuff I am directly familiar with. As far as Linux goes, I have a good deal of knowledge about it dating back quite a while. Let's see... quick search on google shows my first experience with Linux in July of 1992: http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=sheldon.712259366%40pv141b.vincent.iastate.edu&output=gplain When did you first start using Linux? I can safely say I was using it long before it became popular to use. I do not make very many comments about the Macintosh. Apple and I do not get along very well because I consider their UI to be quite poor and have never gotten past that obstacle to really find out much more about the Mac. If you pay attention you'll notice my general attitude about the Mac is one of boredom. |

| Soda, so what's wrong in Kegel's letter? I'm curious because I don't know much about kernels, but I've read most public comments and all the decisions, and Kegel's letter seems very reasonable even in a softies' eye; based on PT's comments, I imagine he'd agree 100%with kegel. So what do you disagree with? What's so glaringly wrong and exaggerated? |
