MS to omit anti-virus from Vista | |

Microsoft will omit anti-virus protection in Vista, the next version of Windows, which it plans to ship late this year. As with previous versions of Windows dating back to Windows 2000 at least, Redmond is promoting Vista as a landmark improvement in Windows security. Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's platform products and services division, told reseller magazineCRN that safety and security, improved user experience, and mobility features will be key additions in Vista. But there will be no anti-virus software, the Windows development supremo said during a questions and answers session with CRN. For unspecified business (not technical) reasons, Microsoft will sell anti-virus protection to consumers through its OneCare online backup and security service. | ||

Not surprising this is from the Register, surely the most non-essential "news" site in all the land.
Since MS has not even remotely suggested there would ever be AV in Vista, it's invaluable that the Register reports that they're going to omit it. In other news, MS is going to omit Office 2007 from each copy of Vista as well. |

I agree. What a ridiculous article. Half of the Register's and also the Inquirer's "news" isn't even news. It's as if the title of this article is meant solely to get people angry at MS for no reason.
BTW, we'd probably have built-in virus protection in Windows by now if it weren't for the IE-Netscape anti-trust lawsuits of the late 90s. I'm sure that Microsoft could've bought up McAfee, Trend or some other company and quickly integrated it into Windows like they did with Giant Anti-Spyware, but they're just too leary of the lawyers crying bloody murder again. We'll just have to continue to dole out $30/year to vendors like Symantec, which overcharge their customers for their bloated utilities. |

Yes, thanks for reminding me about the Inquirer, which is even worse.
You're right, we probably would have had AV long ago if not for the government. Look what that might have prevented if MS had been allowed to do it. Still, putting a souped-up Giant Antispyware in there is going to go a long way toward righting the ship. I'd say these days the type of crud it protects against is more prevalent than what AV protects against, particularly given that Vista's firewall and secure mail program will keep the two obvious entry points for viruses/worms off a system. BTW, MS will be offering OneCare, which has AV, should it ever make it out of perpetual beta. Since that will dovetail into the system in a low-overhead fashion, it'll surely be a better choice than the likes of the ever-worsening Symantec, and probably no more expensive. |

| i'm curious why so many are down on Symantec these days? Has something changed? It seems I keep running across bad feelings toward Symantec. |

| mooresa56, I'm a fan of Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition, but their over-the-counter personal edition is bloated and can actually slow your Windows down. Also, their products will download definition updates only once a year, so you're forced to buy the new version every year in order to be safe. I've heard that they're switching to a subscription model, which is effectively the same thing (and the same thing as MS's OneCare, but I bet that that will be a much better value). |
