Thanks Brian. We have received word that Microsoft has released a new revision of Windows Update. Some people are reportedly having problems with it (Window XP). No news yet on the new features, however.

There is nothing special about it. I tried it already and it seems a litlle bit faster. That's all. Am I missing something?

One of the updates toasted my windows XP setup to where I had to reformat the HD. Then I had to call Microsoft to activate and explain the reason :-) No problem from them when I told them it was because of their update site.
Still... it shows a few bogus update drivers for hardware I don't even own.

It's too bad WU in XP is actually a step down from previous releases. Basic functions like the ability to deselect any item or category in the list is not present in "Personalize Windows Update," even though it strongly suggests that it is. For example, there's a Promise driver update there that causes major problems (I had to rollback from it the other day). It'll be there forever, since I'm not going to reinstall it, and there's no way to deselect it.
It's also sadly deficient in listing details about the various updates, often only having a one-line summary if that. It seems to me much more detail was available in older versions.

Here's a helpful tip -
DON'T INSTALL the driver updates from windowsupdate unless you're ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that your PC ACTUALLY CONTAINS that hardware!!!
Sometimes, you'll still have to think for yourself...

I haven't had any problems with windows update from XP on any of three XP boxes. No phantom driver offerings, no drivers offered that hurt my systems, no lack of availability. I'm behind firewalls (I imagine most of us are) and still have no problems. I don't though, see any difference between today and any other day. I doesn't look to me as if it has changed any.

On a completely unrelated topic, when is ActiveWin upgrading to ASP.NET?

#9: True. Unfortunately, that's not enough. The ATI and Promise drivers alone proved that this week, with the newsgroups lighting up with problems from people who definitely had the hardware. OTOH, the Intel NIC driver actually worked for me, and I didn't even have to reboot. I was so surprised that I about died.

I read somewhere that the new Windows Update site uses .NET technology, and when the switch was made is when all hell broke loose, including the week-long downtime a few weeks ago.
Yeah, sign me up for that .NET thang now! NOT!!!

#17,
Well, excuuuuse me :)
Sheesh !
Anyway, whatever they did Windows Update is all screwed up now. Every machine I have shows updates under Windows Update that will not install properly after the download. EVERY ONE! I'm talking a mixture of Win2K and WinXP machines.
Even the most hard-core MS apologists have to admit, Windows Update is all hosed up right now.
