Microsoft confirms Windows Wi-Fi flaw | |

Microsoft said Tuesday that under certain circumstances, attackers could exploit an anomaly in how Windows 2000, XP and Windows 2003 systems establish wireless connections. But users can take simple steps to neutralize the threat. Mark "Simple Nomad" Loveless -- senior security researcher for Mountain View, Calif.-based Vernier Networks Inc.'s Vernier Threat Labs and a self-described hacker -- released details of the glitch last weekend at the ShmooCon 2006 hacker conference in Washington, D.C. In his written findings, Loveless said, "If a laptop connects to an ad hoc network it can later start beaconing the ad hoc network's SSID as its own ad- hoc network without the laptop owner's knowledge. This can allow an attacker to attach to the laptop as a prelude to further attack." | ||

Ad-Hoc isn't something I typically use, but it saved us a few weeks ago at my Sisters house.
She had purchased (finally!) high-speed internet from Cox. I bought her a cable modem for christmas, and she bought herself a new iMac 20", Airport Extreme, and Airport card for her Laptop. I came over and set up everything for her. Only problem is, the damned Airport didn't arrive on schedule. To get around the problem, her iMac 20" (which was ethernet wired through a temporary router I bought with me) was set up in ad-hoc mode. She could connect to the iMac with her Laptop via Wireless, and the iMac acted as the bridge between the wireless Powerbook and the Internet connection. It worked beautifully (in typical Apple fashion) and got us by until the next day when the Airport arrived. I then shut down the Ad-Hoc on the iMac and that was that. I'd never use it for permanent connections though. TL |

Nice story, TechLarry, but does it have anything to do with the article? Or was this another of your shameless plugs for anything Apple?
In other words, does the Apple (in typical Apple fashion) exhibit the same "flaw?" Bythe way, did I ever tell you the story . . . :-) |
