Microsoft's MSN Services Add Users, Still Trail AOL | |

Microsoft Corp on Tuesday said it had added some three-quarters of a million net subscribers to its MSN Internet access service in its last quarter, bringing the total to 7.7 million customers. In addition, MSN also attracted about a quarter million subscribers to other pay services on its network of Web sites, mostly users of extra storage in Hotmail e-mail accounts, MSN Vice President Yusuf Mehdi told Reuters. Other pay services included automatic bill payment and online gaming at MSN's Zone video game site, Mehdi said. | ||

We do like to hear the truth. We are just sick of the factless and groundsless "M$" bashings that do nothing but clutter up healthy debates. <insert>And that goes for those who have nothing educated to say about all things anti-ms.</insert> I'll listen to anybody as long as they can keep to what we are trying to do here... which is discuss articles and the like in an objective manner. You confuse our derision of lunatics with fanaticism over a company. That's simply not the case. The problem is the anti-MS contingent who posts here have very little if any grip on reality. I beat up on Microsoft all the time, when they deserve it. |

BTW, I don't care at all about MSN. Don't use it, don't want it.
But I just wanted to point out something funny. According to the anti-MS contingent because MSN is "bundled" with Windows, it should be the dominant player in the market. Yet for some strange reason it is not. Why is that? Could it be that bundling, or even giving it away for free(check out Best Buy) doesn't necessarily guarantee you marketshare? I only say this because I always find it interesting that the conclusions the anti-MS contingent makes have one consistent trait... they do not apply universally, but there are all these strange exceptions to the rule. Whereas if you take my position that the best product always has the dominant market position, I do not have to make up exceptions to explain different cases. AOL clearly has better marketing than MSN a better integrated product experience, as well as name recognition and that explains their market lead. It's not clear but this article only speaks of new members. One of the problems MSN has had is retaining users. They get a lot of new ones from the $200-400 freebies at Best Buy, but after their year is up they don't stay with the service.
AOL has had similar issues, although not quite as bad of churn. So they might have 7 million new users this year, but they lost an equivalent number of older users. |

Enough of this BS. You guys just go ahead and IGNORE the numbers. Check this out.
On 10/25/00, it was reported (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/14245.html ) by the REGISTER (known to hate Microsoft) that the subscribers broke down as... MSN - 3,500,000 AOL - 25,000,000 Ok, so at that time MSN had 12.28% of all MSN and AOL subscribers combined. Now, just 15 months later, lets look at WHO HAS GROWN... MSN - 7,700,000 AOL - 33,000,000 Now, MSN has 18.92% of the combined subscribers. So, when Microsoft claims to be eating AOL for lunch... they are telling the truth. F U AOL. I dont love Microsoft, but I hate AOL. They ARE the media. |

And one more thought... by the time xbox online launches in the summer... they will likely have sold 4 million or so xbox. If ONLY 10% (and I have NO idea if that is high or low) of those xbox owners choose MSN... thats another 400,000 subscribers.
