Virus Targets Microsoft Web Services Software | |

Someone has written a virus targeting Microsoft Corp.'s Web services software, which has yet to be released, security experts said on Wednesday. The ``proof-of-concept'' virus was sent by its Czech author to antivirus vendors so they could work with Microsoft on a fix, said Craig Schmugar, virus research engineer at Network Associates Inc. The virus, dubbed W32/Donut, targets executable files created for Microsoft's .NET Web services technology under which software will be available online as a service to anyone using any device. The threat from the virus is low since the .NET software is still being tested by developers and has not yet been installed on a lot of machines, according to Schmugar. | ||

| I'm interested to see how the virus gets around code access security. Granted, the .NET framework that this targets is probably beta 2 or maybe RC 1, but it's still surprising. |

Then... "In addition, the virus does not spread itself via e-mail or Web browsers, but requires someone to save an infected file to a computer hard drive for it to infect other files, he said." These are actually the easiest ones to protect against with virus scan. |

"targets executable files created for Microsoft's .NET Web services technology " this is interesting. Home users, more than likely, won't be running web services, so why should they care?
Since .NET executables, in whatever context the exist (as WebForms, WinForms, or Web Services) are still all standard Windows PE files, that sentence should read "targets executable files created for Microsoft's .NET technology" and left it at that. Now, if I'm wrong and the virus only attacks .NET executables that containt classes that inherit from System.Web.Services.WebService, then I'll stand corrected. |
