As Expected, MA Reverses and Joins Up with Microsoft | |

You didn't really think that the state of Massachusetts was really going to drop Microsoft Office did you? In one of the most bald-faced attempts ever at getting Microsoft to change its products slightly to accommodate specific needs, Massachusetts recently launched a high profile campaign to adopt more open document formats for official records. The move would have seen the state supposedly drop Microsoft Office, which doesn't support open document types. But then Microsoft committed to what Massachusetts wanted all along: It announced that the new Open XML document format used in its upcoming Office 12 productivity suite would be submitted to a standards body. Problem solved. | ||

MS could have stopped this from the start by announcing support for the ODF format they helped define. If MS stays true to the spirit of openness, then everyone wins. However, if MS tries their proprietary extension game...
Time will tell. |

And Kriss would say that ... it looks bad that he would let some open source fanatic go on junkets to Brazil and Japan and Puerto Rico and a bunch of other fun spots that had been paid for by the open source bribemeisters. As for O'Reilly ... free tickets to a conference are not the same as First Class tickets to Brazil and Japan and a bunch of others. The whole thing stinks of corruption. |

#6 I think Quinn discredited himself without anyones help.
If you take money or trips or hotels from a "movement" and then try to ban that "movements" biggest competitor from doing business for arbitrary and downright silly reasons you have invited scrutiny. Open source is getting nowhere even when it gives it s products away. So now they've tried bribery. It blew up in their faces. |

OpenDocument is just a con game designed to attack Microsoft.
Productivity is all about the functionality in the product being used, not the format the data is store in. As of today, 97% of PC users can read Microsoft Office documents either through Office itself, or via free viewers available from Microsoft. The idea that forcing millions of people to switch to some crappy format patented by Sun or Adobe would suddenly make it more "open" is a con game. Sun holds patents on OpenDoc - it isn't open. Adobe holds patents on PDF - it isn't open. Massachussetts chose 2 patented document formats because Quinn was bribed. Its that simple. |

The world according to Latch:
Sanity is claiming ODF and PDF are "open" and "good" even though ODF is patented by Sun and PDF is patented by Adobe. Insanity is claiming Office XML is not evil just because Microsoft has patents on it. Latch = poster boy for lying OSS fanatics who think anything Microsoft does is evil. |
