Hot-Selling DVD Players Dim VCR's Once Bright Star | |

By industry accounts, DVD players closed 2001 as the hottest-selling holiday item and spelled the death of the once popular videocassette recorder. Last year marked the biggest price decline for DVD players since the gadgets debuted in 1997 for about $500. And 2002 may prove to be another bumper year despite worries about the U.S. economy, analysts said. The appeal of DVD players is quickly eroding the grip VCRs once had on the home entertainment front. The decline of video tape will not be missed by many consumers, who find DVD's compatibility on computers and gaming consoles more versatile. | ||

| Are we in some alternate reality where these DVD players that are apparently obsoleting VCR's can record programming? I know here, unless I want to lay down a whole lot of money for bleeding-edge technology, that's impossible. I can't imagine how this article failed to mention that teensy concept, which should keep VCR's in business for many years to come. |

| Yes, but those are still in the extreme minority, and they're not the DVD players that this article seems to prop up as the total solution. DVD players alone are not the answer, and until DVR prices come down, they will not be the answer either. |
