Memo to all those who received new PCs loaded with Windows XP over the holidays: Download the new security patch from Microsoft now! (See the links at the bottom of this page.) For all other XP users and those who have added Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP) to a Windows 98/98SE/Me system, pay attention as well. Microsoft has documented a vulnerability first reported by eEye Digital Security, the same folks who found the Code Red worm last July. But because of the holidays, I don't think everyone was paying attention. | ||

Techlarry:
Common... don't you think you are being a bit harsh? 4 days to post a fix is not bad at all. In that time they had to find the code that caused the problem. AND THEN test it to make sure it was compatible with the rest of the OS and hardware and.... you get the point. That's not bad... I'd rather them take the time to get it right then shooot from the hip and put out some patch that disabled a piece of the OS. Other companies have done that before... (read #11) and I for one know of a few people who got one of those patches. Try not to have such unattainable standards for MS or any other software provider. |

This is not the first time that it's taken days, or weeks, for Windows Update to provide the proper patches ON TIME. The so-called auto-updating features of Windows XP is one of it's moust touted features. Too bad it's also time-lagged :( TL |

Your post assumes that the patch, or fix, is not ready for distribution. In the case of this critical patch, it was complete, tested and even distributed via other means. Someone was simply asleep at the Windows Update site and didn't do their job in a timely fashion. Everyone please remember, this was not some simple 'font' update, or other silly patch on Windows Update. It was a Critical patch that everyone on the planet was saying MUST be installed NOW. TL |
