A movie set to make its debut next month at a film festival may draw more than its share of attention because of an unusual plot element: the fictional killing of Microsoft Corp Chief Software Architect Bill Gates.
Gates, the world's richest man, is "killed" in the opening scene of Nothing So Strange, which will be shown at the Slamdance festival in Park City, Utah. The movie opens with Steve Sires, a professional Gates impersonator, being shot to death during a public appearance. The documentary-style scene is intended to appear as if it were videotaped by a bystander.

The first thought that came to my mind was "a professional Gates impersonator"? How do I get that job? :)
I agree, I'm concerned about Linux zealots taking this film seriously and launching a terrorism campaign. I would not put it past some of their mindsets.

The kind of people to actually kill someone like this don't need a film to know/decide how to do it - if they are going to try it, they will try it whether a film comes out or not. But yes I think its a bit sick, but what do I know.

Awww, poor little girls!!! This guy started this project over a year and a half ago: he has been running the billgatesisdead website for that entire time.
Where were you back then?
Do you think the movie would be just as good if they created a make-belive world's richest man who is the head of the world's most pervasive monopoly, one which is frequently touted to be evil and dangerous? Personally, I think it would be just plain pathetic, keeping it Bill, keeps it real. Bill understands satire and parody at this point.
Slugpee, Did it just to get hype? It's only posted here via an email; the billgatesisdead website creates more publicity for the film then this silly little site of people who are gonna be too afraid or too offended to see it.
People go out and get some lives.

Heh. Unfortunately I was only half kidding. :(
There is an old saying, to fight a war first you must dehumanize the enemy. You must convince yourself and your soldiers that the enemy is not human, only then can you kill them with no empathy. Thus words such as "The Great Satan", "Evil Doers", "Infidels", and so on come out to play.
You see those words today coming from President Bush, for obvious reasons. The same was true with WWI and WWII, and so forth.
When the cause is just as in when our nation goes to war it's a strangely essential component of the war effort.
However, the same tactics are also used by zealots who do not have a just cause, but at least think they do. Usama Bin Laden uses such phrases to describe the West... Urging people to go forth and kill Americans because they are not human and do not deserve to live. Then you have the anti-abortionists in the states running rampant bombing clinics, assassinating doctors and so on. What language do they use? Yep, the same dehumanizing speech to justify their hatred.
As I said I was only half joking, because I hear the exact same kind of dehumanizing speech coming from Linux zealots daily. Go look at the other article posted today from the Register. What is it they call Microsoft? "The Great Satan of Software" or something like that.
I was only half joking. Half of me figures that the Linux community is smart and realizes the speech they use is over the edge. The other half of me has met some of them in person, and thinks the other half of me is a moron.
"There is nothing like having your finger on the trigger of a gun to reveal who you really are. " - Eric S. Raymond

#19 - So please explain to me why the Linux community continues to use dehumanizing language when referring to Gates and Microsoft? Please explain to me why it is beneficial to the community to refer to Microsoft as "The Great Satan" and other such nonsense.
Your inability to formulate anything other than an ad hominem attack completely discredits you.

Sigh, more ad hominem.
I'm sorry #21, but that is not enough to explain. The banter that one hears coming from the anti-MS contingent of the Linux community is one of complete utter hatred towards Microsoft. A hatred that burns as bright as that from Al Queda and so forth. It goes much beyond the faceless corporation banter that one might here regarding GE or GM, banks, etc.
#22 - I asked you to at least try to respond intelligently, all you presented me with is ad hominem. Your credibility is now nil.
It's kind of humourous. I have a tendency to analyze situations and cut right to the chase. Perhaps it's not politically correct, but given the viscious ad hominem's coming from #21 and #22 it's obviously I've hit a truth nerve.

I'm sorry #24, but ad hominem is when you attack the messenger rather than the message.
I'm sorry that you are unable to engage in a rational discussion on this issue.
