Stand by for More Nasty Web Attacks in 2002 | |

If security experts are calling 2001 the worst year for computer viruses, and December the worst month, how bad will things get in 2002? Experts are predicting that viruses and their cousins, the self-propagating worms, will find new and even more nasty ways to attack computer systems, possibly even hitting mobile devices, pocket PCs and smart phones in the coming year. Computer users should expect to see more viruses that try to dupe them into taking action that will execute the malicious code, said Vincent Weafer, senior director of Symantec Corp.'s security response center. Virus writers have learned that it's easy to trick people into opening attachments by telling recipients they are photos of Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova or labeling them ``naked wife.'' Other virus ruses included misleading people into believing that by clicking on an attachment they could participate in a survey about the events in Afghanistan, or indicating that it was an antivirus software update from an established vendor. | ||

Actually Nimda was probably the worst virus/worm that has ever hit the enterprise. The damage it caused was far worse than ILOVEYOU, Code Red or others combined.
However, it wasn't reported because it came only a week after the 9/11 attacks, and there was a note of fear that this was coordinated. Primarily though, a lot of companies were really afraid to publically admit just how much damage it caused and how poorly they were prepared for it. Nimda spread fast, and it performed a DoS attack as it went. We had it hit within our company and within an hour after the first machine was exploited, it had spread through our entire IT department. Furthermore every machine infected was spawning up tftp sessions and attacking the routers, flooding the network with traffic. It was totally crippling. At our company we responded rapidly, primarily because I quickly identifyed it was using IIS as the attack vector. We had most of the development machines running IIS off the network within two hours of first noticing the problem. That reduced the network congestion and allowed our production systems to function normally. Of the local companies I've spoken with, we had pretty limited impact, we spent about two days cleaning up after it. Several major Fortune 500 companies were completely crippled and spent the next several weeks cleaning up after it. With ILOVEYOU we learned to configure our Exchange servers correctly. With Code Red we learned to keep up to date on patches with our production servers. (actually we weren't hit by that, but it brought the point home) With Nimda we learned that letting every tom dick and harry install IIS on development boxes without maintaining patches was a disaster waiting to happen. I don't forsee 2002 being worse than ever, as long as people learned the lessons from previous attacks. You want to solve email worms then configure Exchange correctly, install anti-virus software, and apply the Outlook 2000 security patch, or Outlook XP. Don't even let your users be tempted by attachments. |

#6 - You can do the same type of blocking in exchange, as well as run anti-virus software, etc.
Most people aren't willing to lose functionality just for warm fuzzies, they want substance. |

#6 What does exchange have to do with any of the email worms?
.vbs and files are interpretted/executed via the Windows Script Host, right? Can this be turned off? |
