Microsoft chief dines in a Linux city | |

MUNICH Speaking at a private dinner with select captains of German industry on Wednesday, Steven Ballmer, chief executive of Microsoft, may have felt a small sense of triumph in his company's battle against open source software. A year ago, the Munich city government became a poster child for the open source movement by signing on to a high profile switchover from Microsoft products to the free Linux operating system. The city's move to Linux, however, has been delayed and troubled, a situation that seems to vindicate views expressed by Ballmer about the drawbacks to open source software. | ||

"When we implement a Microsoft product, we can only call one person for help with the software and that is Microsoft," Hofmann said. He said if one Linux specialist company did not provide sufficient support, the city "can change over easily to another in one year."
Ha ha ha ha ha ha. That has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard about switching operating systems. I pity the poor employees having to switch operating systems every year. Hofmann said. "That said, it will probably be at least five years until we realize any major savings." Dumb and dumber. |

He is talking about switching from one Linux specialist company to another within one year, not switching operating systems. With microsoft there is no such choice because there is only one Microsoft. |

If there are 100+ versions of Linux, I doubt a "Linux Specialist Company" will be an expert in all 100. If Munich hires a company that specializes in Ubuntu, and then impliments Ubuntu, then they will have locked themselves into the tiny subset of companies that support Ubuntu.
In reality, very few city governments would have reason to tinker with the OS code, so if they lock themselves into Ubuntu Linux, for example, they will have in fact cut down the number of companies that could support them to a miniscule number. Hundreds of thousands of companies support Microsoft applications and desktops with a Microsoft OS and maybe hundreds of Linux support companies exist (and even less will exist as Linux on the desktop) gets less and less likely. In effect they have locked themselves into a tiny subset of companies that can support them And when they say they won't see any financial return for 5 years, the are really saying they will never see a finanical return to compensate for the lost productivity. Office 2003 would probably cost them 30-50$ a year per employee, and Xp Pro probably costs them less than that. A trivial sum if it makes their employees more productive. A wholesale changeover (which they won't actually ever do) will cost them millions. As anyone who can read knows, the Microsoft contract was going to cost them less than the one they planned to sign with SUSE/IBM. These guys in Munich are too funny! They started this "migration" in April 2002. Their first deployment will not start until the second half of next year, 2006, and then only a very small deployment of 250 out of 14,000 computers.
I guess they are being paid by the hour! lol What an embarrasement . . . Meanwhile, even Torvalds stated recently that Linux is not ready for the desktop. The OS is over a decade old . . . Plonk! |

| Yeah this whole Munich thing is totally retarded. There will never be any savings in the longterm. Its just going to cost the taxpayers a huge amount of money in the short term for no advantages whatsoever. Its a huge disaster already. Linux sucks! Munich is retarded for attempting to switch to Linux. Everyone knows they will never complete the switch. Even if they complete the switch they will then realize it doesn't work. Then the taxpayers will have to pay even more so that the city can move back to Windows and Microsoft dependancy. Its much better to depend on an ethical corporation such as Microsoft than be dependent on those commie part time Linux geeks. There are no longterm benefits at all. Plus Linux contains stolen code from the SCO Group who will soon win their multibillion dollar lawsuit against IBM. And once they defeat Novell, Autozone and RedHat every Linux user will have to cough up even more money. This will surely drive the cost of the munich linux migration into the sky just like SCO's stock price. And even if there were potential longterm savings it would be stupid to think longterm while technology is still evolving at this extremely fast pace. |
