Microsoft® Office 2003 Service Pack 2 contains significant security enhancements, in addition to stability and performance improvements. Some of the fixes included with SP2 have been previously released as separate updates. This service pack combines them into one update.

This is no small patch.

The large one is for users that don't have the Office CD to insert.
I've never understood, or liked, MS's patching system starting with Office 2000. This whole "Insert CD to continue" when installing patches is an IT nightmare.
I can't count how many times a user on a plane, train, travel, whatever tried to use a feature in Word or Excel, only to be greated by the "Insert CD" prompt, which they don't have of course, and their apps won't load from that point on.

why didn't you just do a full install instead of a half install that will require you to add features on down the road? Seems like the smart thing to do if you keep have this happening to you.

Right. It's all about giving the user options. If you don't like that stuff and know what you're doing, always do full installs and always download the larger, redistributable versions of patches. If the alternative is an "IT nightmare," then the IT administrators aren't up to snuff. Enterprises should never download the smaller, update patches; that's just stupid.

Microsoft Office 2003 ask you at the end of installation if you would like to keep some files which can be used for supplying certain files when updating the Office suite.

#3: advertised functionality can be handy, but since the Office MSIs are generally too big to be cached, the ResolveSource action prompts for the source media. It's either that or kiss goodbye to 2+ GB of disk space. It's also a handy copy-protection mechanism. Patching always required the source media before MSI 2.0.

I agree slarkin, I never got the request disk in SP1. I guess they made some changes to the installation SP2 or they have become incompatible.

#8 & #10 that's weird, cos I never got asked for the original CD at all, in fact, it updated it pretty quick and then asked me to reboot machine.

#4,
Full installs ARE the norm. This does not prevent the "Insert CD" prompt when certain features are used for the first time.
"Full" install is not truly a "Full" install.
And in the Office 2K days, licensing did not permit the storage of the cab files on the Image. It was prohibited by MS.
It's at least a little better with Office 2003. That is, of course, as long as the user doesn't run Disk Cleanup, which erases the MSOCache folder.

I never knew that - i have never had it ask me to install anything after doing a full install. I normally click custom and then manually tell it to install everything. Maybe it is because you are choosing just Full. I am sure doing a custom installs everything as i have never had it ask for any disk even after the install files have been removed.

#14,
If there's a way, users will find it :)
It can also happen if they install a third-party add-in, typically with excel.
