Munich's Linux migration slips to 2006 | |

The city of Munich will not start its migration to Linux on the desktop until 2006, a year later than planned and three years since it decided to go with the open-source operating system. The migration of 14,000 desktops from Windows NT 4.0 to Linux and Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 to OpenOffice.org was originally planned to start in 2005, but the schedule has slipped, Peter Hofmann, the project leader of the migration, said Monday. | ||

"Hofmann said that the first department to migrate to Linux and OpenOffice.org will be that of the Lord Mayor. This migration is due to happen in the middle of 2006, although not all of the department's 250 computers will be migrated straight away."
Can Microsoft afford to lose 50 or 60 computers to open source? The horror! Oh. Wait. It isn't quite that bad: "Some departments will start with OpenOffice on Windows ..." |

| Well this is what happens when some politicans get a bright idea into thier head and have no idea how it will be implemented. What a mess. Some computers going to Linux and OpenOffice some going to windows and open office some staying windows and ms office. Yeah they are going to save big money with an enviroment like that. Here is what i bet - they make that transition to multi OS and will never fully be Linux and Open Office only. It will then cost them even more to support because they have multiple OS's and office applications. |

| By the time the migration actually happens, Linux on the desktop might be a decent competitor to Windows XP. Of course, Blackcomb will likely be out by then. |

| Fellas, this is a disaster. Remember, this is in MUNICH, the same city that makes a certain famous linux distro. If they can't make the switch in 4 years, who the hell could. |

Most companies would have killed a pilot once they got to this point and realized it wasn't working for them.
