recent survey by Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com) found that the decision to run on Windows platforms is more a function of the availability of applications than security or cost considerations, reports say. According to Rackspace, 60 percent of its Windows users and 92 percent of its Linux users agreed that Windows is less secure. Meanwhile, 50 percent of Windows users found Windows to have a lower total cost of ownership and 77 percent of Linux users said Linux was cheaper. | ||

Aren't the people best qualified to judge which server has a lower total cost the people that use both OS’s on servers, like web host service providers? The web host service providers that I have dealt with charge a small premium for Windows hosting, making Windows slightly more expensive to use than a Linux host server. This may be due to the Front Page extensions included with Windows server hosting.
Does anyone that uses both Windows and Linux servers at the same time, serving similar functions, have actual cost numbers that they can share, that may clarify this otherwise emotional topic? |

Get it? TCO really doesn't matter. What I find astounding is that those questioned by Rackspace thought that Linux was more secure than Windows. All I can say is great job OSS and the tech media. Together, your PR campaign to promote OSS is successful.
