Vista to Open Doors for Desktop Linux
Time: 13:49 EST/18:49 GMT | News Source: *Linked Within Post* | Posted By: Andre Da Costa

It would seem that the upcoming release of Microsoft's Windows Vista does not seem like a good thing for the desktop Linux community. After all, this update to Windows XP is going to focus on two attributes which have pushed users to Linux for years- security and stability. Upon closer inspection though, the move to Vista may be the perfect time for the Linux community to make headway on the desktop and increase its user base dramatically. As the time gets closer and closer to the public debut of Vista the operating system seems to be constantly losing the luster which was associated with Longhorn. It seems that this new version was originally planned to be a large step forward from XP but as we learn more about it and Microsoft's plans for the future, the changes are constantly being scaled back from what was originally promised. Whether it's the lack of a new file system or the "Monad" scripting shell, the absence of innovation in this operating system is giving it a black eye, no matter how nice the GUI is or how much Internet Explorer 7 resembles FireFox.

#1: why do you need more than what XP has, considering most don't need all of what XP has? And a lot of people could get by just fine with Linux, Firefox, TBird and OO. As for innovation, the FOSS community doesn't have the money to buy innovative companies like MS does, nor the lack of ethics to outright steal ideas like MS does. However, I will say that the time for Linux for the masses is 5-10 years away. While it's fine for most server tasks, it's still a little too primitive on the desktop for the general public. Linux is coming. Get used to it. MS has.

Latch: People don't want to use a Linux substitute that may or may not be suitable for programs like Quick Books, Quicken, ACT! and many more. They want what they are familiar with. Every time that I offer to "save" people money with a Linux box they find a reson to put Windows on the box instead. Every time. Windows....Get used to it. 95% of PC users have.

#3: While studies have shown that sheeple tend to stay within their comfort zone, which is why a lot stay with Windows no matter how many times they get screwed over, that will change over time. People moved fom DOS to other environments. Windows didn't just appear with the very first PC. Linux's share used to be 0%, then 1%, then 2% etc. It's growing at a faster rate in the server space. MS cannot co-opt it or kill it. All it can do is get better.

Besides, I'm not advocating that Windows die a fast, horrible death. Contrary to what many might think, I want Windows to be a better product, and MS to be a better company. Is that too much to ask? Unfortunately, MS falls short on both counts and shows little sign of making genuine significant progress. They are still too self-absorbed and concerned with maintaining their dominant position. If only they put as much effort into making their products better. Windows and Linux can co-exist in my world. Too bad that it can't be like that in MS' world, where for MS to win, everyone else has to lose.

next year on the desktop
next version on the desktop
next month on the desktop
blah on the desktop
blah
blah

linux/opensource/etc is always "coming soon". Well, years later... I still dont see it.

Linux on the desktop has stopped growing.

And the figures I have access to show it's market share actually dropped from July to August.

XP's market share, on the other hand, continues to grow each month by approximately 20% or more of Linux's total desktop market share.

From a year ago, XP has grown from 55% of the market to 66% while Linux has barely grown at all.

Companies are replacing their Win2000/NT and Win9x desktops with XP, not Linux or Apple.

I have a slightly used retail boxed version of SUSe 9.3 I will gladly give to anyone willing to pay for shipping.

P.S. – the thing weighs a friggin’ ton with the useless documentation included.

#5: in your haste to slam me, you overlooked how I said that Linux on the desktop was too primitive for most. Does that sounds like I'm saying it's to magnificent for the masses? As for the rest of your blather, I have no idea what you're talking about. Try reading what I said instead of just substituting your own reality. You look silly debating your own misconceptions.

#6: sounds like you're talking about Longhorn.

#7: got a link to support your claims?

OS Platform Statistics

Current trend is that Windows XP is growing fast. The windows family counts for about 90%:

2005 XP Linux
August 66.3% 3.3%
July 65.3% 3.5%
June 64.9% 3.5%

etc.

#10: I would hardly consider the web traffic to one site over 3 whole months to be indicative of a general trend on a global scale. Nice try, though. Meanwhile, I talked to 2 friends and each has moved to Linux, so that means Linux is growing at a rate of 200% compared to 200% decline for Windows if I use your math.

#10 By 32132 (207.81.85.238) at 8/28/2005 11:42:38 AM
#11 Its actually 3 years of OS stats.

I await numbers from your sources that prove otherwise ...

Ha ha ha ha.

Anyway, back to reality. Linux on the desktop is dead. It is not the YEAR OF LINUX ON THE DESKTOP. It never has been. Never will be.

#11 By 15406 (24.43.125.29) at 8/28/2005 3:43:18 PM
#12: Well, according to your post #7, you said it dropped from July through August. That's 3 months. And rest assured, Linux's day will come. At the rate MS has been going, maybe even sooner than XP SP3, I mean, Vista.

#12 By 32132 (142.32.208.233) at 8/29/2005 1:51:12 PM
"And rest assured, Linux's day will come"

It already came and went. It was a Tuesday. In 2004 sometime.
