Google unveils instant-messaging entry | |

Google on Tuesday took the wraps off its instant-messaging entry, a program that allows text chat as well as computer-to-computer voice chat. Google Talk appears to be based on the Jabber open-source standard, which would allow consumers to connect with other IM systems that work with Jabber. Google's site also said a Gmail account was necessary to use Google Talk. The company's moves are a further sign of its ambitions to dominate search in the face of growing competition from rivals Yahoo, AOL and MSN. The reports come one day after Google rolled out a beta version of its free desktop software, Desktop 2, that includes a personalized toolbar dubbed "Sidebar" for accessing e-mail, stock quotes and news, as well as a scratch pad for taking notes and tools for searching the desktop and Microsoft Outlook in-box. | ||

| If you would have gone to the Google Philosophy "Ten Things" site yesterday you would have seen. "Its best to do one thing really, really well. Google does not do horoscopes, financial advice or chat." Today that is replaced with a different philosphy. I see this as sort of what happened to the Matrix movies. (Let me explain) The first movie was made by creative minds, they made a movie but it was better and it was different then other movies, and it was a hit! People seen it 2 and 3 times. Then the Matrix 2 and 3 were taken over by the movie industry. They went public so to speak. Matrix 2 was bad and 3 I never saw hearing it was worse then the 2nd. They tarnished the Matrix quality. Google was made by creative minds that did something different and better, now they have gone public and are releasing things like Desktop 2 and Google talk. I'm not even interested, a clutter bar and another chat program? When MSN and Yahoo catch up on the search engine...google will lose its "wow" quality that it had because they were doing things differently. They will only have advertisments to stand on in the end because they didnt stay focused on being creative, they are just following the same plot as other movies....er..a...search engines. |

| tried google talk. beyond the fact that i only had one contact, it feels half-baked. I would expect that from ANY new IM client, but still disappointing. Plus, am I the only one that has kind of grown happy with the state of the IM world? I know its fragmented, but at least I don't have to read about the "IM Wars" every day. But here we go again... |
