Microsoft rejects Visual Studio delay request | |

Microsoft has rejected a request from developers to push back delivery of its oft-delayed Visual Studio 2005 in order to fix bugs. In addition, the software giant said it will include a significant new feature that will be introduced in an interim release of Visual Studio 2005 in the next week. Through a feedback form on the Microsoft Developer Network Web site, developer customers asked Microsoft to release a third beta of Visual Studio 2005, which is due for completion on Nov. 7. In the original suggestion, a customer said that Visual Studio 2005, which had a second beta program in April, has too many bugs and performance problems. "I'd rather have a good product 6 months from now than a mediocre one in 3 months," wrote Clint Stotesbery last Thursday. The majority of developers who wrote into the suggestion form agreed, saying that the quality of the product was more important than meeting the Nov. 7 deadline. Visual Studio 2005, formerly code-named Whidbey, will arrive at least one year later than originally planned. | ||

Latch: Maybe Microsoft feels confident about their internal builds. Not to mention they still have to go through RC0, 1, and 2 (3 if need be).
If it gets delayed again, it will be because of problems with an RC build, not a beta2 build. I say it's really quite stupid to add a build in the middle of testing if you think about it. Adding a build at the end, if it is needed, is a MUCH better way of doing things. |

I can attest from personal experience that VS.NET 2005, even in it's beta 2 form, is definitly not "half-baked".
It certainly has issues, but compared with VS.NET 2k3 beta 2, this thing is rock solid. Hell, compared with VS.NET 2k3 final, this thing is rock solid. I, personally, can't wait for 2.0 of the framework and VS.NET 2k5. |

| Ditto that, RMD. The Feb and April CTPs left a bit to be desired, but I haven't had any major issues with beta 2. I've been using it for several months now for desktop and web apps and am quite pleased. |

| I don't use it so I don't have a valid opinion on its usability & stability, but if a lot of devs are squawking about it then there must be something there. And like I said in my first post, who does it benefit to rush it out the door? It's not like it's a game where it has to ship for Xmas. |

| VS 2005 is one of the last things I'd use the term "rushed" with. Many of the comments in that thread don't even mention specific issues or are feature requests. Not everyone is going to be happy with a release no matter how long its dev cycle is. At some point you have to ship. Those asking for new features this late in the cycle or who have issues that aren't significantly high in priority will have to wait for the next release (which won't be very far away). |

| Latch, and I say again, it is stupid to add a build in the middle of the beta cycle, always add it at the end. |
