Vista Gives the Linux Desktop a Chance | |

Opinion: It's late, it's lame and installing it won't be cheap, so now is the perfect time for Linux desktop vendors to make a charge at Microsoft. My friend Mary Jo Foley wants Microsoft to come clean about what will be in Vista. I just want Microsoft to fess up to how they will make it worth having two different versions of the Windows client OS. Microsoft recently said that the company was working on two different Vistas: one for everyone, which I'll call Vista Vanilla, and the other for enterprises, which I'll name Vista Pro. The boys from Redmond are also working on two versions of Office 12, but that's a story for another day. So why two versions? Do you get 10 percent more security in Vista Pro? From where I sit, better security is the only virtue I see left that Microsoft can put in Vista. | ||

| Even with all of its faults the copy of XP Home that I just recently finally purchased for use in Virtual PC is vastly superior to any distro of Linux that I've tried. Even if Vista ends up being a less ambitious upgrade than initially intended, I can't imagine any average user deciding to switch to Linux. |

I personally believe that two versions of Windows is a super idea.
But where I differ from Redmond is that I believe that the cheap, ugly, bullet proof and fast version designed to run on cheap, ugly and stable hardware should be the Pro version. It’s the home version that should have the flash, run on fast dual processor machines and have all the bells and whistles one can imagine including media features. This one can be expensive and should be frequently updated ala OS X. It’s the home user that wants the flash, not the business user. These are not the same markets as MS has correctly identified. I predict that businesses like my own will hang on to their XP machines for 3 to 4 years (possibly longer) before a significant upgrade to control costs. And yes I agree with the author for the business owner there will be absolutely no compelling reason to upgrade machines from XP 2. |

This business user is stuck looking at a computer for 12 hours a day six to seven days per week. He doesn't want ugly. He wants something easy to use and easy on the eyes. If flashyness will yield a better experience, he's all for it.
In four years, XP will already have entered extended support. If history is even close to what the future holds, Vista will replace it on at least half of corporate desktops by then. As for no compelling reason to upgrade...you don't seem to know much about Vista. Speak for yourself, Mr. oldog. |

Bob,
I've got a question for you. Tell me one product that you use in you office that is fancier than what you buy for yourself at home? The furniture? Your desktop computer? Your portable computer? Your camera? Your company car? Not a chance - your boss is likely to give you something that's bullet proof and cheap. With the emphasis on cheap. Why is that? Because it’s only got to get the job done, period. If he's smart he's paying you as little as possible and trying to take home a fatter profit for himself. The only thing that he's likely to pay more for is something to spy on you to make sure you’re not screwing around. That's something MS should put in the Pro version. If they did that I would buy Vista in a second. |

I've got beefier desktop systems, would have beefier software if not for a personal MSDN sub, and beefier monitors at work (supporting two or three monitors). My work setup is up to the needs of my job, the same with my home systems. Many companies provide employees with gadgets - laptops, PDAs, smartphones, etc. - that they wouldn't ever use themselves.
When you look at it this way - I get more done using a XP than I did with 2000, because XP has bells and whistles (that you'd like removed) that 2000 didn't have. A few dollars per license is worth the productivity gain per employee. |
