In a move sure to spark tons of heated "toldja so" debate, Apple has released a new mouse, Yahoo reports. Aptly named Mighty Mouse, it's got a touch-sensitive top shell which works like left/right buttons, a pair of force-sensing side buttons, and a 360-degree scroll button which doubles as the third button. | ||

| "Squeeze" the side buttons? What's up with that?! The Apple web site makes it sound like you squeeze both of the side buttons in order to invoke an action. But can the buttons be used separately? e.g. as back and forward buttons, which other mice have supported for over 5 years?! |

| Apple's clever trick will introduce extra button functionaltiy to old school Apple users that are put off by a mouse with more than one button. I remember being told, by a fervent Mac user, when Windows XP was released that Windows was too complex solely due to the right mouse button. This person, who was in publishing, had the shivers when I asked them to try out Windows XP. Odd but true. |

I think bobsireno hit the nail on the head. This isn't about innovation; it's about easing Mac users into the 1990s by giving them a modern mouse that doesn't send them running for the hills because it has more than one button. It's amazing that this is necessary, but it's Apple's own fault for babying their customer base like they always have. This post was edited by Osprey on Tuesday, August 02, 2005 at 19:27. |

time.windows.com must be down... as my calendar doesn't say April 1.
I have no comment on this, except that it is yet another example of apple insulting the intelligence of its users. Why do you remaining apple folks put up with this candy stand company? |

I applaud the comment. Its so rare to stumble upon such a TRUTHFUL comment that in so few words... so accurately describes the state of mac-onomics. ooninay, I'm not poking fun at you. I'm glad you found something you like. And I think your view is representative of the vast majority of mac users. |

Oh, my. The Apple one-button mouse conversation again...
Folks, here's the deal. Apple designed an interface that is efficient to the point where it doesn't NEED two mouse buttons. It's part of the Human Interface Design. That said, I prefer a two-button mouse too, even on a Mac. TL |

Holding down one button for a period of time and/or using the keyboard as a modifier for the one button are just work-arounds for what otherwise would be simpler with 2/multiple buttons. The interface is no more efficient than any other major GUI.
NEED, in this case, would be like saying the Windows GUI is so efficient that no mouse is needed. While it's true that you can use it without a mouse, efficiency and/or simplicity are lost in a number of cases. The same applies to the Mac GUI and the one/multi-button mouse case. |
