Billing Glitch Holds Up Hotmail to Cellphone | |

Hotmail, the world's largest web-based e-mail service, cannot yet open up its service to mobile phone users, because many wireless operators do not have the right billing software, Microsoft said Friday. Microsoft, which owns Hotmail and runs it as part of its Internet services unit MSN, said in August it wanted to give its 30 million European Hotmail users the opportunity to receive selected e-mail via strings of text messages. Although the service has been trialed successfully in Denmark and Switzerland and will be rolled out commercially there early in the new year, Microsoft will have to wait for wireless operators elsewhere to install new billing software. | ||

From the article "Microsoft and the mobile operators will share any revenues from the text messages generated by Hotmail. " It seems that if the wireless companies want more revenue, they will adapt their systems. Regardless of that, it is rather a foolish system design to not be able to bill in two directions. |

Three things you should know about European phone companies.
1) In several countries, such as Spain, you have to pay for the time you are conected, just as a long distant call here, even if is a local call to another apartment of the building where you are. 2) When you call a cell phone, from whichever phone you use, you pay nearly 3 times more for that conection. The one who receive the call also has to pay. 3) Free IPS are quite common over there. I use one when I visit. Yet I can easily be charged $120-130 for conecting to the Internet in one month, at 38-40 BPM for the same time I will pay here $17. I will not be to quick in blaming Microsoft for the whole thing. |

#13 Maybe you missed the part of the article that said that "Microsoft's technology partner Migway, a joint venture between Danish mobile operator TDC Mobile International and Anglo-Dutch IT services and mobile solutions provider CMG , is the company building the bridge between Hotmail and the text services.
Gibbons said Microsoft's relationship with Migway, and CMG's excellent contacts with operators, is helping it to overcome the billing issue of the 40 operators Microsoft wants to sign up. " It seems that they are upgrading and that all will be well for Microsoft. |
