Exclusive: First Longhorn Beta Invites Go Out [Updated!] | |

You've waited and waited, but the day has finally arrived: On Friday afternoon, Microsoft began sending out invitations for private beta test for Longhorn, the next major version of Windows. The Longhorn beta includes both the client and server versions of the product, according to the invite, as well as related development tools for those programmers who elect to participate. Additionally, testers can optionally beta test Internet Explorer (IE) 7 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. | ||

Does anyone know how I become a tester in the Longhorn private beta? Does someone have to nominate me?
I've been an MSN Beta tester for a couple of years now, but I can't seem to find my way into platform products other than some of the more public betas like MSH, Reporting Services SP2, etc. I'd like to test (on Longhorn) some .net code I've been toying with, and I'm really interested in desktop search and the new file management UI features. |

| My understanding of the Longhorn beta is that it will be rather closed for a while but they'll start taking applications for new testers and start opening the beta to additional testers. By beta 2 the code will be pretty widely available. |

| CPUGuy, I've heard of some just now arriving in people's inboxes... I believe anyone can set up an account at http://connect.microsoft.com (what they're using to host the beta) but those Microsoft will invite into the program receive unique invitation codes. I signed up Friday but my status is still "Pending"... there isn't anything going on there... |

| I'm doing R2 beta and Win2k3 x64 beta (unfortunately, can't test that one :( ), and a few other products right now. |

| FWIW, if you are an MVP, you more than likely should have been accepted by now. |
