Major vulnerability in zlib library affects most software, including Microsoft | |

A major buffer overrun vulnerability was discovered in a recent version of the 'zlib' library used by much of the software out there today (including Microsoft software). Internet Explorer, Internet Information Services, and probably more products are vulnerable to specially crafted attacks. Many other, non-Microsoft, software products are vulnerable including FireFox, the Apache and Apache 2 web servers, many utilities and servers on Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. I've often heard from open source advocates that one major problem with relying on a single provider, or even a small subset of providers, for your organization's software is that this will result in a kind of software monoculture.
In agriculture, if the only crop in a field is potatos and there is a blight that only affects potatos that farmer is screwed, but the farmer with a variety of crops is safe. But doesn't this zLib vulernability show that the same danger of monoculture affects open source? In fact, doesn't it show that it has the potential to be far worse in open source products since open source doesn't just cross project boundries, it often crosses company boundries as well. If Microsoft has a problem with IE, or with some other common MS component, then it could potentially affect a lot more than just one or two products. But with an open source approach, where code sharing is rampant and often uncontrolled (copy/paste), doesn't it create an even more serious problem? |
