RealNetworks' music and video player will become the default player on Compaq's consumer computer line, replacing Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Player, the companies said Tuesday. The deal, scheduled to be publicly announced Wednesday, also will seek to draw Compaq users to Real's paid subscription services for music and video content. Called RealOne Membership and RealOne music, the services give users access to sports, music and other content, for a monthly fee. | ||

I think this is great. Now we will see that people prefers MS software because of the quality not just becase it comes with the OS.
#4 I want to buy a Dell computer without any software(already got them from MSDN). I would love dual PIII's or PIVs but for now the no software (2GHz)version is fine. Is that possible? |

RealOne is horrible, both it terms of quality of streams and quality of the product itself.
I'm willing to bet that Real made some pretty awesome offers to Compaq to get them to switch. The only thing this proves as that while consumers will typically flock to the best application, corporations will flock to the deal that makes them the most money, regardless of the consumers. |

Your life must be way to simple to complain/worry about crap like that... Does it take up extra hard drive space on your 40+gb drive? Is the icon intrusive on the start menu? That argument is worthless |

Um... there is still competition if someone can choose to put RealOne on their desktop. You can go buy a Compaq... they oughta satisfy your needs.
Oh, in case you were wondering, in business there is NEVER a LEVEL playing field. |

BTW I downloaded the RealOne Player. It did take a while to find the "Free Version". I have to say that it is leaps and bounds ahead of Real Player, in fact I'd call it damn good.
I like the new interface. But I'm not ready to comment on the streaming (if its better or not) because I haven't used it enough. I only use Real Player for Streaming Real Media. In fact I only use Windows Media Player for streaming Video or MPEGs. Winamp is what I listen to music with. I do choose to use WMP when offered on websites because the streaming technology IS better and you get better picture and sound at any level. I'm not saying that RealOne sucks (though I really hated Real Player because it was so intrusive and the interface was built by a blind man) I'm just saying that I choose WMP. I never have a limited view about software (except AOL --- Never looking that direction again) I will download and try out anything. If I like it I'll buy it (example: FTPVoyager by Rhinosoft - Incredible FTP Proggy http://www.RhinoSoft.com)(no i'm not a rep :\ ) It needs to provide me with better features to do so than what I currently use. In fact, that is why I turned to IE 4 From Netscape 4. Interesting how that works. |
