For the last two weeks, Microsoft has been in talks to buy a private Silicon Valley company, a move that underscores just how eager Microsoft is to catch up with Google, the search and advertising giant. The company that Microsoft has pursued is controversial: Claria, an adware marketer formerly called Gator, and best known for its pop-up ads and software that tracks people visiting Web sites. The Gator adware has frequently been denounced by privacy advocates for its intrusiveness. | ||

| Maybe Microsoft wants to buy the company to own the rights to the ad software, so they can extinguish it as part of their effort to eliminate spyware. Or am I dreaming? |

This is the second time I've seen this same headline and thought it said, "Microsoft said to be in talks to buy China."
I doubt Microsoft will do anything 'malicious' with this code - they've worked hard lately to get a good reputation in this area. That said, I'm sure they're not just buying Gator to do away with it... That said, I don't think this deal will go through. |

I think this is a dumb idea, and whoever at Microsoft dreamed it up needs to get canned. |

| I imagine this was one of those things that really wasn't supposed to leak... I'm trying to keep an open mind about it, but without MS actually saying what they want to do with the technology it's hard not to try and connect the dots... |

I wonder if Microsoft's AntiSpyware Program will remove their own Spyware?
