Gates Still Roots for Tablet PCs | |

After failing to break into the mainstream of computing, the Tablet PC might have been written off by many, but it still has at least one strong supporter. Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft, said Monday that he still believes in the form-factor and repeated a prediction that, with better hardware and software, it could still dominate traditional laptop PCs. Gates showed prototype Tablet PCs at the Comdex show in Las Vegas in 2001--a year ahead of their 2002 launch--and at the show said in a statement, "It's a PC that is virtually without limits and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America." | ||

| A lot of us root for tablet PC's. We also root for them to bounce, not shatter, when dropped. Accidents happen. Until it becomes accident-proof the tablet PC will stay a niche item. |

Aside from Gates being wrong for the first time in his life ("It's a PC that is virtually without limits and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America."), I bought a Toshiba Tablet earlier this year and I am really enjoying it.
Nevertheless, the reason they don't sell well is two fold. One, they were much more expensive than laptops when they first came out, but this year they somewhat closer to their laptop counterparts in price, but need to come up even. And, two, they need to be carried by the likes of Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry's, and Circuit City. People need to see what they are buying before they make a purchase. I will bet that most people, outside the knowledgeable people that run and visit this site, of course, don't know what they are. The greater majority of those that know what they are have never played with one. Having said the above, if you are looking for a desktop replacement laptop, the tablets just aren't there yet. |

| #2 jdhawk, do you use your TabletPC for work or personal things? The reason I ask is because I've been tossing up the idea of buying one for work for a long time now - it suprises me that they aren't more popular as they seem perfect for the work environment where you're constantly going to meetings, scribbling things down etc. |

I bought it for work. I have to attend a lot of meetings. Of course, that entails note taking and the occasional presentation. There is nothing like a tablet in this environment. We buy Dell desktops and laptops and we are not normally allowed to use personal equipment at work, but given my position I am cut a little slack. In fact, after numerous comments from almost everyone that I work with and for, we have started a pilot testing several brands.

I'd be interested to know what your findings will be - as you may know I'm not much of a Dell fan but I really want a Tablet for fairly much the same reasons you got it for. |
