SOMETIMES a story comes along that, although it doesn’t appear to be red-hot news on a superficial level, has far-reaching implications. Last week, AssetMatrix — a Canadian market research outfit, issued the results of its regular survey of desktop operating systems in the corporate world. Apparently, Windows 2000 is once again the most widely used desktop operating system with large-scale users, by a comfortable margin. It’s been that way for years. | ||

"Migrating hundreds or thousands of desktops, with dozens of applications, terabytes of data and maybe half a dozen or so hardware standards can be extremely disruptive — even harmful — to a corporation’s health."
"But for many, there’s no compelling reason to change. From their point of view Windows 2000 is a stable, reliable foundation for serious computing. It ain’t broke, so it don’t need fixing." Duh....this is a no story. Obviously in the enterprise, OS's don't get changed on a whim. Home users will do an OS upgrade more easily or more often. Am I surprised that Win 2000 is still #1 in the business community? No. |
