The approximate 300,000 people who've picked up a copy of the Backstreet Boys' "Never Gone" might not know it, but they're part of a growing skirmish between the record labels and digital music master Apple Computer. Both Sony BMG and EMI are rapidly increasing the number of copy-protected CDs they release in the U.S. CDs with the protective technology prevent users from posting them on the Internet and allow users to burn only three copies onto other discs, which themselves can't be copied again. Sony BMG is already selling about half its discs with the technology, while EMI releases its first this summer. But the technology also prevents consumers from transferring songs onto an iPod, the Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) digital-music player that currently holds about 80% of the U.S. market. | ||

I just can't believe how stupid the labels are... they complain for years about P2P networks and now, at a point where legit networks are finally getting solid footing in the market, they try to screw Apple, which is the reason people are going legit. It's also about the fact that Apple now huge power in setting prices for their music. They want to charge more than 1$ per song, and Apple doesn't. So they're trying to break Apple's dominance. Which I think it stupid - I'm not a huge Apple proponent, but it seems like the labels are trying to bite the had that feeds them. |

I'm not suprised by this. The Labels are so fearful of losing control of music they will do anything to extend their grip. TL |
