Nine state attorneys general still suing Microsoft are considering whether to try to make the company sell a stripped-down version of its Windows operating system, according to those close to the deliberations. The nine also will seek to close what they view as loopholes in the federal government's settlement with the company. | ||

I'm actually confused. I thought a stripped down version of Windows was part of the consent agreement. Maybe that was only for OEMs, and the states want it on the shelf?

#3, they ARE charging for the new apps (aka features), it's a new version of Windows for crying out lout.
Just the idea that the states are even considering this really pisses me off, they no right to force MS to create Office for Linux, and make them keep making Office for Mac, and sell a stripped down version of Windows (a stripped down version of Windows is no longer a consumer OS), the apps that come with Windows are a platform, other companies can build onto that platform... they aren't just apps. #3, also, you are basically saying that no matter what MS does, they are wrong.... if they add features to the OS and keep the same price, they are undercharging, and if they add features to the OS and increase the price, then they are overcharing, that's just obsurd. Please name ONE thing that MS has put into the OS that consumers don't want (note, that consumers is plural, not singular, meaning get your head out of your ass, there are more people in the world than just you and a few other zealots). |

Actually that's not at all obvious. The only time new features bundled with Windows have given them a competitive advantage is when they are superior software. Even then, because of the quality of the software, unbundled sales and downloads have flourished. If your claim was true MSN would be the #1 ISP and Notepad would have run all text editors out of business. If MSN fails we should break up AOL, right? AOL has already caused Prodigy and Compuserve to fail. Why should Microsoft be held responsible for AOL's demise? I for one do not like AOL, do not use AOL, and do not recommend it to any of my friends or family. Oddly enough I feel the same way about MSN. If AOL fails, it's because of their own doing. |

| I just read this article and this one on CNET [http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-8098768.html]. I think these states are full of sh*t and this is just making more annoyed. How in god's green earth are they going to justify MAKING a company release the source code for something as a punishment. That is just plain crazy and it scares the hell outta me! |
