64-Bit Windows? Wait for Longhorn | |

After more than 18 months of delays, the shipping version of Microsoft's Windows XP Professional X64 Edition operating system is finally here. But even if your PC has a 64-bit CPU, we advise waiting for Longhorn, Microsoft's next-generation Windows due out in 2006, unless you work with data-intensive programs such as video rendering, 3D animation, or CAD and engineering. | ||

Chapnet, do you actually have any experience with XP x64? The people I know who are running it all seem to really like it. Windows ME was a half assed OS because it was a point release that nobody really believed in - everyone was busy getting ready for Whistler.
Xp x64 really wasn't developed for home users - it was developed for people who really needed needed the power and those are also the people who will get the software for it. So for most consumers it would be a bad decision, the people who need it will be able to use it. And it will stop people from using other 64-bit OSes while they wait for Longhorn :-) |

Why wait for Longhorn? Go ahead and get the trial version at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/trial.mspx
And if you like it, you can purchase it at Newegg.com, ZipZoomFly.com, etc.... |

XP x64 is actually based on the core of the x64 Windows 2003 SP1 operating system -- not Xp Pro x86.
And Longhorn is actually based on the x64 Windows 2003 SP1 build as well. The release of XP Pro x64 is a way to seed the development of 64 bit applications for Longhorn. So, for example, Virtual Server SP1 (out in beta now) will run on a 64 bit OS (XP Pro x64 or 2003 x64) as well as the 32 bit versions. And a lot of 64bit applications ar eon the way from Microsoft. The release of the XP Pro x64 OS also gives people who bought an AMD x64 or Intel EMT64 hardware platform a free OS if they already were running XP pro on it. Of course, if this were an Apple OS, if would cost 129$ to upgrade (yearly). |

| I liked Windows ME myself except for when a virus wreaked havoc on my system and I had to format so I just went back to 98. But it was good never gave any problems at all and was a start to some of Microsofts adventure in digital content creation areas in Windows such as MovieMaker and user experience features such as a more compelling Media Player, IM and so on. |
