In the baseball-fantasy-flick Field Of Dreams, protagonist Ray Kinsella--played by Kevin Costner--hears a godly but whispery voice resonate: "If you build it, he will come." A similar question can be posed about Microsoft and the antivirus software it's in the midst of creating. And the answer is a resounding yes, according to a survey of 100 CIOs' software-buying plans that Forrester Research conducted for the investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston LLC. Seven in 10 CIOs surveyed say they'd consider licensing a Microsoft antivirus product. | ||

| quux, as long as MS doesn't bundle their AV with Windows they shouldn't have to worry about the overbearing EU. |

| #4: I was under the impression that the major AV vendors all participate in a program where one informs the others when a new strain is discovered. They still develop their own solutions, but share info of the threats. This puts the good of society above profit, which is refreshing. Under this arrangement, will MS patent any new virus it finds and then try to license it to the other AV vendors? Kidding, but with MS you never know. |

Microsoft charging for antivirus or spyware software is ridiculous. This just gives Microsoft incentive to leave more loopholes so you would be wise to buy their products that you wouldn't need had they not created the loopholes in the first place. I for one do not agree with buying microsoft software to fix/secure microsoft software.
If everyone kept their computers up to date with patches there would be a lot less severe virus outbreaks. So when companies choose to not be up to date with patches, and I'm not saying there aren't good reasons, they need something like anit-virus software to protect their pcs. Now is that Microsoft's fault if they have patches open to the public, at least the valid consumers. For the most part I don't think it is. So why shouldn't Microsoft be able to add another solution to keep windows virus free? Anti-virus doesn't just protect users from viruses that exploit holes in Microsoft software. The one thing that I think would go along way at preventing viruses is if Microsoft forces users to come up with an original administrator password. Also, my computers at home I make sure that other users aren't set up with administrator accounts, which also seems to help. With all these other free options to protect windows I see no problem with microsoft selling anti-virus software. Now if they forced people to have easy passwords or force them to not update their pcs with patches or force them to make every user and adminstrator then I would have a problem with Microsoft selling anti-virus sofware. FYI: I'm aware that my post isn't clearly written. The main this is that it all makes sense to me at least :) |

What is the relationship between patches and viruses? "preventing viruses is if Microsoft forces users to come up with an original administrator password" How does an original Administrator password protect one from a virus? |
