Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said on Thursday the Internet's role as an important mass medium for advertisers was hobbled by the slow rollout of high-speed broadband service and was still years away. Gates, speaking at a Microsoft-sponsored conference on the future of digital marketing, said the slow adoption of broadband access into homes has depressed consumers' use of the Internet. "If it's there and on all the time," Gates said of Internet access, "you would use it quite extensively." He added it should become a priority for political and corporate leaders to make broadband access products more available to home users. | ||

Everybody here is missing the point.
Broadband is not available everywhere. I live in a suburb of a middle to large sized town and its going to be 6 months at least before I get cable broadband (god only knows when I can get DSL). I moved out here in Jan and my use and my wife's use has dropped to maybe minutes a day. I do all my surfing at work and actually stay later to do shopping etc. Dial-Ups suck, cable isn't everywhere. I think what Bill is saying is that of the user's that don't have cable many of them would be online all the time if they could get broadband. Or maybe I'm wrong and in that case ignore this post :) |
