Now Microsoft 'decouples' Longhorn from .NET | |

A security architecture touted as one of the core benefits of Microsoft's next major Windows upgrade look like being the next casualty of the Longhorn death march. Mary Jo Foley reports that only some parts of Longhorn will be based on .NET 2.0, rather than the entire OS, as originally intended. If this latest bout of indigestion is true, developers gain compatibility at the expense of the superior developer environment of .NET. | ||

This article is inaccurate. The entire OS was never supposed to be based on managed code.
The HAL, kernel, all the way up to userland is unmanaged. Userland is basically split between managed and unmanaged stacks. There's the Win32/64 unmanaged APIs and the WinFX managed APIs set alongside (as opposed to on top of as it is now). The unmanaged APIs won't see many additions and some functionality will only be accessible by going through managed code. Some security defaults rely on managed code infrastructure and favor managed code development. Win32/64 is moving to legacy status for the most part in favor of WinFX, however, it'll be some time before the entire OS is managed code. At the lowest levels, Avalon is still supported by unmanaged WGF (DX 10). Kernel drivers (like display drivers) are still unmanaged. MS has spelled this out for over 2 years now. There's no excuse for treating this as something new or different from what MS planned. |
