Yesterday afternoon Joystiq editor Ben Zackheim and I sat down with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to discuss the Xbox 360. We talked with him about what he thinks it’s going to take for the Xbox 360 to be a success (he thinks they’re going to swipe the top spot from Sony), his take on the PlayStation 3, why we might see one or more new versions of the Xbox 360 next year (hint: never say never to a next-gen optical drive), Microsoft’s plan for backwards compatibilty, some more details about the new console’s integration with the iPod and the PSP, and how all of this fits into Microsoft’s living room strategy. Also present for the interview was Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach. | ||

Leaving out Blu-Ray or HD-DVD was to be a mistake.. now they know PS3 got it, they add it.
And I don't know why we aren't surprised they choose the concurrent one. Geesh, I hope both standards will collaborate better than now and find a unique solution. I don't want the Beta vs VHS fight again. P.S. Pissed about the screensavers poping ad. Awin really need it? |

I don't think it matters as much which format any console supports, mainly because the whole thing will be built-in and there will always be games for it, even if the format one console chooses turns out to be less popular in the long run. It matters more with set-top boxes and PC drives, as backing a format which eventually runs out of steam early will see no more drives & discs, less support and lots of discs that will not be compatible with later formats.
PS as for the pop-ups, bit annoyed that they only seem to come up when I click on something, just to get round the pop-up blockers, grrrr :( |

| Sony's Memory Stick is going the way of Beta Max. Note that their PS3 is reported to have a multi-type flash memory adapter capability. |
