Apple's new Tiger operating system turns up heat on Microsoft | |

The cat's out of the bag. Tiger, the latest version of Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system, is on the prowl. This is hardly news to the Mac faithful, who have been alerted through daily e-mail reminders and a running countdown on Apple's Web site to the day Tiger is "unleashed." The folks in Redmond, Wash., are bracing as well. Tiger, Apple's fifth major operating system upgrade in four years, keeps the competitive pressure on Microsoft, which is at least a year away from introducing the successor to Windows XP, dubbed "Longhorn." | ||

tgnb - Windows XP cost me $150 in 2001, plus free upgrades over the years... SP1, SP2, WMP10...
If you bought MacOSX it cost you $129 annually...(what's commonly known in the industry as the Annual Apple Tax). It's like $500 since 2001. Probably even more because you're forced to buy a new copy whenever you upgrade your computer(i.e. buy a new one). Whereas I just keep upgrading my hardware by buying new parts, and keep the same install. LOL! It's funny. The anti-MS zealots are so desperate they gave up on Linux... grasped hold of Apple... not realizing that Apple is worse than Microsoft in the world of closed versus open. So now all of their old anti-MS arguments can be recycled to be pro-MS. |

Why are Mr. Jobs marketing and branding statements being delivered here as news and fact?
Even the most cursory look and use of Tiger, requires one to conclude that they are two basic additions to Tiger over the last version - one is so poorly executed - their widgets, that one has to exit the environment to use them, and exit that mode to return to normal work, and the second is a knowck off of a download - Konfabulator. Neither are at all revolutionary, or unique to Darwin....er, I mean OSX. LH is a platform - an entirely different animal from a point release to a very different and completely undiscoverable *nix Finally, so long as one's software choices are so limited as an OSX's user's are, and those same users "know" where to find X, Y, or Z software to perform associated tasks - then naturally, those same users will "know" where to go to perform tasks. To them real issues over doscoverability and a truly revolutionary and unique UI's are meaningless - each of course is so well supported under Windows that they are overlooked - as designed. |

| Hey Now, ClosedStandards, we're very proud of the fact that here at Activewin, the community is so lame, so boring, so nonconversant that the only articles ever to have more than 5 comments are about FireFox, Linux, the Mac, the iPod, OS X, or anything that is clearly superior to the Microsoft-flavored equivalent. Take that! |
