It’s amazing what happens when you step back from the trees for a view of the forest, as Doc Searls did in his post today (see Conceivable?). Wrote Searls, "When I read Microsoft-Red Hat Warming Trend on CNET, a question leaped to mind: Would Microsoft buy Red Hat? Money surely wouldn’t be a problem. PR surely would be." Yesterday, I was the one in the trees, speculating on what if anything could be implied by the fact that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Red Hat CEO Matthew Szulik recently dined together in New York City. | ||

Red Hat is already profitable, and they know that any overture with MS has the potential to enflame their userbase. Since RH has the largest Enterprise-level install base of all the Linuxes, it seems much more likely that MS is looking to better integrate with the top Linux distro.
Plus, Dvorak predicted MS would come out with MS Linux, and he's hardly ever right. This post was edited by Latch on Friday, May 13, 2005 at 17:00. |

| RedHat has lost 220 million over the last 4 years. Not bad for Linux. |
