"What Xen is, is a very thin layer of software that essentially presents to the operating system an idealized hardware abstraction," said Simon Crosby, vice president of marketing for XenSource. The OS is no longer glued to the hardware but floats above it, talking to Xen as if it were the machine. According to industry experts, the "operating system" as we know it is going to seem much less important in the near future. Windows, for example, will not go away but it will no longer be considered the central experience of computing . The recent release of Apple's Tiger OS and the anticipation of Microsoft's Longhorn remind us that, for all intents and purposes, the OS is the computer. But that might all change in the coming years. | ||

| A misleading headline, as "traditonal" OS's would still be required but would run on the Xen virtual machine as the "sub-headline" implies. It will be interesting to see what new nightmares this will bring to us until the bugs are worked out or it is killed off. Is Xen really needed, other than by Intel to fend off Opterons and other competitors? |

Virtualization. That's what's being talked about, and if we've learned anything from WINE or VMWare, it's that virtual machines are slow and sloppy. Sure they can work, but speed and efficiency is lost.
Xen is just a new version of an old idea. Nothing to see here, move along, citizen. |

The virtualization being discussed is nothing like that of VMWare. (WINE is not a virtual machine, BTW -- it's a recreation of Windows functionality.) VMWare creates virtual devices where necessary, and allows more or less direct access to the hardware where possible. This is different from a true VM like PearPC, which must emulate all layers of hardware.
The coming virtualization will take advantage of new features built into the CPUs and other hardware themselves, where switching back and forth between OSes is as simple as swapping out the contents of RAM for that of another OS, or possibly just splitting the RAM between the two (or possibly more) operating systems. You'll be able to run, for example, Windows and Linux (or for the Microsoft purists here, Windows XP and Longhorn) essentially at the same time. This will not have an immediate effect on most users, but the ability for enthusiasts to explore other options or to switch to a preferred OS for specific tasks will be appreciated. On a more practical level, help desks will be able to run both OSes that their company runs to better assist users by seeing exactly what's on the screen in front of them. Developers will be able to write code on one platform and test it at full effect on another without having another computer, something not possible even with VMWare, since the 3D layer for that is still in its infancy. Xen is a potential evolution beyond the current VMs. The next generation of VMs is likely to reside at an even lower level, possibly as low as the motherboard. |

AMD also supports Xen
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_543~94608,00.html IIRC, their dual-core Athlon64s will be the first of their consumer-level CPUs to support virtualization. "Longhorn" will support this as well. If I can find it, there's an IDF video from last year that shows off some of what you can do with this technology. |

Slower than real machines. But I user Virtual Server to "containerize" applications I am not 100% sure will play well with others and where speed is not the primary requirement. It takes me less than 30 minutes to get a new VM up and running by copying a vhd, NewSID it, join the domain, get Mcafee running etc. And as time goes that will take less time. I do have to say Virtual Server SP1 beta on a Xeon 550 test machines run at an acceptable speed. I look forward to running it on a production box. I also look forward to giving students "containerized" VM's to play with without worrying about them trashing "real" servers. |

Another "me too" OSS project. Only this one requires you to modify the OS to get it to work. Sure, no problem - yeah, right.
With VM Ware a mature product and Virtual Server a viable alternative, leave it to the OSS crowd to be a day late and a dollar short - oh! what a minute, did I say dollar - Xen is "free" - natch . . lol The beauty of the present offerings, VM and Virtual Server, is that you don't have to modify the operating systems that run on top of them. Sheesh. . . |

OK, #9, how many systems using XenSource's product have you set up? Intel give you any help with them? lol
Again, the beauty of the present VMs is that you DON'T have to modify the OSs that run on top of them. ZenSource's and every article that they link to on their web site says that in order for ZenSource's product to run you first have to modify the OS. So, that means that every time an OS is changed by its owners they then have to check with ZenSource to determine if the changes made will effect whether or not it will continue to run on top of ZenSource. And . . . you don't see a problem with this . . . |
