This update to Windows XP provides support for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), which is the latest standards-based wireless security solution derived from the IEEE 802.11i standard. It also contains Wireless Provisioning Services (WPS) Information Element support, which enables improvements in wireless network discoverability. | ||

Even for small home networks, WPA-PSK/TKIP is the way to go, and most configuration wizards make it easy for home users, or small office network operators to provide themselves with better security. Under XP SP2 it is just as easy to discover and configure clients as WEP is. The stability is also better - probably owing to the use of phased-shift keying over frequency shift keying.
The resulting carrier signal is smoother, but it would be nice to see a more advanced form of modulation - gaussian minimum shift keying for example would require much less bandwidth and enable much higher data transmission rates with a little more power. I don't suspect that it will be long before we see the use of relatively newer methods of modulation. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to continue with current forms of binary or quarternary phase-shift keying. It doesn't cost any more <materially> to use these forms and the benefits would be enormous - especially because the ranges desired are not so significant as to require substantive increases in power. It'd be nice to see some of these come out of Govt. only programs - such a waste as it was to imasculate that lovely infrastructure...we'd have done well to sustain it, but simply re-direct its energy. |
