Ximian, long an open-source software company, will do business the proprietary way with a new software package that lets Linux computers connect to Microsoft Exchange e-mail servers. Ximian has supported the open-source Gnome desktop software project for Linux computers for some time; indeed, Ximian co-founder Miguel de Icaza was the founder of Gnome. And in a culmination of its open-source efforts, Ximian on Monday released Evolution 1.0, a clone of Microsoft Outlook that has support for e-mail, contact lists and calendars. | ||

#4 - The look and feel have little to do with the functionality at hand. There are plenty of perfectly functional mail clients that have nothing in common with Outlook.
The point I was making was that I've yet to see any innovation whatsoever come out of the open source movement, or rather the Linux movement. This is just another example of smart people not taking advantage of the open environment and clean slate that Linux has. Personally, I think Linux developers should concentrate on the server applications of Linux instead of this pointless and futile attempt to make Linux a real alternative to Windows on the desktop, which it will never be. |

#6. Huh? What's at all innovative about Eazel? Most of it is simply copying from Microsoft and others, i.e. the whole HTML browser/file browser integration thing. The preview pane, etc.
You're right. Sun, et al know where their motivations lie... "We're not Microsoft! Even though we want to be them and will continue to copy all their ideas." |
