Microsoft owns the licence for the technology, although Creasey explained that hard disk manufacturers can use the technology free of charge provided they apply it to a Windows system. Microsoft has revealed a hybrid hard disk that includes flash memory to reduce laptop power consumption by a claimed 10 per cent. The power saving is achieved because the flash memory chip reduces the need for the disk to spin. Jack Creasey, senior programme manager for Microsoft's Windows Hardware Innovation Group, told vnunet.com that the technology is aimed at laptops running Longhorn, Microsoft's upcoming version of Windows. | ||

Yeah, tl, it's illegal to be innovative! Well, at least not here in the US - the DOJ vs Microsoft trial notwithstanding.
But wait until the EU so-called "Competitive" Board hears about this? Meanwhile, Boeing's Dreamliner is kicking Airbuses butt despite the best efforts of the Europeans to kill our airliner industry with subsidies, buy-ins, and government grants - but that's not anti-competitive. |

#2 - It's good to hear that Boeing is still doing well despite the CFO facing jail time, and the CEO having to resign, over how they negotiated a Govt subsidy deal for refueling planes the Air Force didn't even need at the tune of some $6 billion of tax payer dollars.
But the 787 is in a different class than the A380... why do you think they compete with one another? They're both nice planes, but one's a mainframe and the other is a mini. |

| #3: Agreed. Sounds like a hard disk with cache, sort of like every disk these days. The article says 128 MB for the prototype, instead of the piddly 2-8 MB caches on today's drives. I can't imagine how MS would get a patent on this. I would have thought the drive makers would have thought of this a zillion years ago, since it seems to be a natural progression of hard disk caching with today's flash memory capacities & price. Then there's the MS gotcha's, I mean, terms. I'm not sure how MS could force any major disk maker to make a line dedicated to just WIndows. The drive makers make & sell drives. They don't give a rat's ass where they go, nor do they have anything in place to track or manage such a thing. This is the kind of MS behaviour that pisses me off royally. Can they ever do the right thing? |

Actually, sodablue, Boeing's 787 is in a different class than Airbus' on purpose . If you air travel like I do, you know the problem only too well: hub and spoke. You waste time transferring to/from a hub instead of being flown directly to your destination. Airbus' newest entry solidifies this blueprint for air travel; Boeing's entrant hopefully, with much lower operating costs per mile, will help eliminate it.
By the way, I am surprised that you didn't mention Stonecipher's recent departure from Boeing. But, I guess, "resignation due to what the company calls an improper relationship with a female executive," hit too close to the act of a certain other chief executive . . . Not that the above has anything to do with the way Europe is behaving against Microsoft because of its so-called monopoly while they continue to support many many home grown companies with subsidies, buy-ins, and government grants - Airbus being only one of the most promient ones. Fair is fair, sodablue; and that is not how Europe is playing it. |

jdhawk - Don't really have that problem, since I live in a hub city.
I didn't mention stonecipher because it wasn't related to the contract charges. A consensual relationship would not be improper, so clearly it must have been otherwise. I just thought it was rather hypocritical of you to whine about Airbus receiving subsidies when Boeing does the same, even if they aren't particularly legal. |
