With only days to go before the top music companies start selling music online, they appear unwilling, at least initially, to support most of the digital music players currently sold. Analysts have dim expectations for the new ventures because their music will remain largely chained for now to the computer desktop - and only for as long as subscribers pay to ``rent'' it. ``What's the use if I'm going to have it on my desktop and I can't take it with me?'' says Jackie DeLeon, 26, a student housing coordinator at the University of Illinois-Chicago who uses her portable MP3 player in her car. An estimated 1.4 million portable MP3 players have been sold in the United States. Music fans who own them transfer MP3s downloaded from the Internet or copied from CDs into the devices and go mobile. | ||

I'm not going to pay to download music, *period*.
I purchase about half a dozen CDs each month, and that's the way I'll continue to buy music. Until something better comes out. But downloaded music is not better, it's worse. |

Another sad note to all this is that Microsoft has found yet another way to lock people into using THEIR software, and ONLY their software.
That's because all of these download sites use Microsoft's WMA format and secure digital system. I think we can all guess what's next here. A MICROSOFT portable WMA player that will only work with Windows Media Player 8, and allows these downloaded songs to be transported to this player, but ONLY this player. Watch for it... TL |

I'd like to see someone explain why they want to buy music online. Thus far nobody has offered a reason, and I wonder if that doesn't explain why this will always be a failure. How can you sell something to people that don't really want it?
That is to say, I know there is a vast market out there for music piracy. Lot's of people are willing to trade MP3s online for free. Why is that different than selling them? Because people are willing to accept something for free that they don't value. That is the key word... 'value'. If you don't perceive any value in something, you will not be willing to pay anything for it. Which goes to my point that MP3 distribution does not offer anything over the distribution of a CD. There is no physical media, no booklet with lyrics and pictures, the MP3 sounds much worse and I can't univerisally play it anywhere like I can the CD. So the MP3 has no value, whereas the CD does. The fact that I can extract the music from the CD into MP3 format after the fact, is a value-add. But that value-add is contingent upon my purchasing the CD to begin with. |

#8. I don't disagree that the music industry needs to shift it's business. I believe it needs to mature and that means fewer wild parties, fewer multi-million dollar contracts, fewer drug enduced hallucinations.
But to suggest that music sales should go away and artists can only make money by touring means we will only have access to the pre-packaged marketed idol who can sell out stadiums. You doom us to a world of N*Sync and Christina Aguilera and other talentless hacks. I don't see this as an improvement. Do you? |

#11 -- No, I'm saying you will never hear of these other artists. How many local bands are you aware of? Ok, now how many local bands which aren't in your home town are you aware of? The dream of most bands is to land a recording contract, because then they get access to marketing and radio and their popularity will expand.
The thing you fail to realize is that the environment is symbiotic. You need the recording industry just as much as it needs you. I guess I don't see this as a real problem. Recorded music is a luxury item. I say let the free market reign. The free market does not include theft as a viable option, which is what Napster tried to introduce. The real problems I see are with musicians being involved in lousy contracts, and that can only be addressed by the musicians working with their Union. |

#13. Actually sounds like a good idea, I suppose. Then again instead of listening to artists who put out one-hit-wonders you could refine your tastes and listen to artists who put out albums.
#14. How have you been ripped off? Because you listened to the marketing and believe you *HAVE* to have the music? |
