Microsoft has committed itself to releasing Windows Server 2003 Compute Cluster Edition before this autumn's SC2005 conference Microsoft is aiming to have its first cluster version of Windows ready in time for a supercomputing conference this fall. Software Architect Marvin Theimer said on Thursday that the company hopes to have a beta version by this summer, with the final version of Windows Server 2003 Compute Cluster Edition ready by the SC2005 supercomputing conference in November. The company has not announced final pricing for the operating system, but Theimer said the additional nodes of a cluster will be priced at a discount. | ||

What a horrible name. "Compute Cluster Edition"? Why not just "Cluster Edition"?

| #8: not even MS would be idiotic enough to stuff consumer toys into a supposed "Supercomputer" version of Windows. In fact, I would figure they would deliberately leave out IE, Media Player, and most of the junk under Accessories. If you're big enough to need this version, you can manage your patches without a dubious, low-level-linked web browser to do it. |

You should speak to LinuxIsTheft (aka Parkker) about that. He'll be running this in production from Beta 1 onwards. #10 "In fact, I would figure they would deliberately leave out IE, Media Player" But... but... didn't they say those were core components of the OS which, if removed, would stop the OS from running? After all, if they show that they can produce a version of Windows without IE in it, people will point to it and ask why XP/Longhorn needs to have IE bolted in! Putting the jokes aside, it'll be good to see how this performs when it's released at the end of the year. |

#16 - Ha... too bad the reality is that Windows 2003 Datacenter is the only operating system that guarantees 5 9's of uptime. That's 99.999% uptime. In other words, less than about 5 minutes of downtime per year.
Even on Win2k3 Server and Advanced Server, we have not had a single BSOD or unintended downtime in about 2 years. The reality is, despite what you want to believe, Windows is just as reliable if not more reliable than Linux. Sorry to burst your little bubble.
