Microsoft stands behind XP activation policy | |

Microsoft has cited "numerous" examples of individuals selling Certificates of Authenticity (COA) to back up its decision to disable internet activation of Windows XP on OEM'd machines The software giant says people have been deliberately removing COA labels from OEM's PCs or copying COA labels for re-sale to customers and distributors. Disabling internet activation is the latest stage in a long-running campaign designed to stop illegal copying and use of its software. Previous efforts included use of special holograms on CD versions of Windows that Microsoft said would are difficult to forge, to prove the authenticity of the software contained on the discs. However, it seems, people not just the forgers - have a penchant for copies of Windows that are either free or available below official prices, making Microsoft a prime target for forgery and illegal use, especially in emerging markets. | ||

| The only people that I know that reuse Windows XP keys are upgrading from an early Windows XP machine that died to a new custom built PC. They don't want to pay twice for Windows XP Home Edition and shouldn't have too since the original PC is not functional anymore. This situation would not exist if Longhorn had been released on time. Most people would have gladly paid an extra $90 for Longhorn. |

#3, Exactly!
People need to know the limitations of an "Equipment CAL" they get form a major OEM and the advantages of working with a small local or regional builder - better and more direct service and much more flexibility - praticularly is shipped a full boxed retail copy of XP Pro/Home, etc... Even an OEM CAL, subject to the Out-Of-The-Box-Experience rules does not have the flexibility many users assume - change the mainboard for any reason other than to replace a defective one and that's it...one is done...buy a new CAL. Buy a custom rig, with a full boxed CAL and one may do as they wish and despite the occasional need to call in for a new Lic. Key, one may change system components as many times as they wish. We are happily finding that many people, not just small business, but individuals have had it with the big OEM's, inferior support and less robust hardware. Many are willing to pay more in exchange for a better epxerience and much more direct support. Once they come to understand how limiting their equipment CAL's are, they look at the price delta a lot differently. |
