Microsoft Confirms IE Phishing Flaw | |

Software engineers at Microsoft Corp.'s security research team have confirmed the existence of a bug in the Internet Explorer browser that opens the door to URL spoofing attacks. The flaw, which has been widely reported on public mailing lists, can be exploited by a malicious attacker to spoof the URL of a pop-up advertisement and has been confirmed on a fully patched system with Internet Explorer 6.0 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, Windows XP SP2 requires the URL of pop-up ads to display in the title bar when a pop-up has been opened without the address bar. "Our early analysis indicates that only pop-up ads that contain extremely long URLs can be spoofed in this scenario," the spokesperson told eWEEK.com | ||

I use FireFox and I have gotten those damn audio commercials from this site for several weeks.

| csmac, the adblock extension lets you selectively block certain ad-servers. Maybe just block the ones that activewin uses since they seem to server only "questionable" ads to you. You dont HAVE to block all the other ad servers around the net. |

I have not seen the popup adds from this site. SP2 blocks all popup adds. Plus at work( where I don't have SP2 ), I use google taskbar.
What's the big deal? |

I've had to turn SP2's popup blocker to maximum blockage. There were too many ads which were getting through.
The downside is, now I have to ctrl-click any link which popups something. :( Halcyon - Can I do that? Can I deny access to sound just from IE? |

| I don't know what all people here are or are not doing, but I do not get them, nor do I get pop-ups or ads. IE, XP SP2. Spyware Blaster, SpyBot S&D, and Pest Patrol Pro - all three combined are "lighter" than the BETA of MS anti-spyware. Also run Panda Admin Secure with CVP in front of an ISA 2004 server. The last time I had any spy-ware or pop-ups was mid of last year. Site like this ought to charge a few bucks a month and ditch the ads. |
