In the wake of Real Software Inc. announcing a new version of its Realbasic application development tool, the company is concerned about a patent application Microsoft Corp. has filed that could affect all BASIC-like programming languages.
Real Software, of Austin, Texas, announced Realbasic 2005 last week at the Demo@15 conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The new version supports the creation of self-contained executables that run natively on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
It is Microsoft's pending patent application for what it calls the IsNot function in BASIC languages, however, that has Real Software officials concerned.

Ah yes, the infamous "All your base are belong to us" MS patent grab. Hopefully it will be properly denied, or at least overturned a la the FAT patent. This is almost as funny as the ancient MicroSnot parody site, which had MS buying England so that they could license English to the rest of the world.

If they can do it, more power to them.

#4 Paul's opinions on software patents are inline with all the non-MS zealots here, aka
"Personally, I don't believe software patents are a good idea. I realize that algorithms lie in that grey area between a mechanical process (which is patentable) and an abstract idea (which is not), but at a purely practical level I think that software patents generally do much more harm than good.
...
As far as the specific IsNot patent goes, I will say that at a personal level, I do not feel particularly proud of my involvement in the patent process in this case."
And he's right, software patents in general are a joke, but when everyone else is doing it and then sueing - you really have no choice but to "play the game".
As a lot of people have commented, Real should go out and patent "Isnt" and whilst they're there also include "IsToo", "AreNot", "AreToo" etc. Then perhaps they can patent "try ... catch ... finally", "do ... while", "for" etc.

#7 Once again you show your complete and utter ignorance of well... everything! Those blinkers must be attached bloody tightly!
I don't want Microsoft having "IsNot" type patents no more than I want IBM or RedHat or Real or <insert any company you like here> having those patents. If you got your head out of your ass for a few seconds you might understand that Paul feels fairly much the same way that a lot of us do about software patents - that they shouldn't exist in their current form. So it's not Microsoft's fault, per say, for the IsNot patent, it's the US PTO's fault and the morons working there who are granting patents left, right and centre with their view that "if the patent isn't valid it'll come out in court one day" or to put in another way "I can't be bothered checking for prior art or even using common sense, I'll grant this and let the courts do my job later on down the line".
So given the US PTO's stance on granting such patents it's no suprise to see companies trying to patent anything and everything "just in case".

I believe I'll file a patent for the word "IsToo"
After all, if Microsoft has this patent then every child under the age of 8 will have to pay Microsoft patent royalties daily! I might as well get the other half :)
WillNot. WillToo! WillNot. WillToo! WillNot. WillToo!

"No it isn't, you foul mouthed $%##%."
Aren't you violating the TOS with such a comment? Although its sad to see you have resorted to childish name calling I can't really say that i'm surprised! The same question i asked the other day applies here again. I wonder If others observe something similar in their life as me. Oftentimes the people who don't trust anyone are the people who can't be trusted. Oftentime its the bully who complains most about being bullied. So in that sense its really quite fitting how you of all people, would resort to namecalling, and use bigot as the word of choice!
"Do not offend users by posting comments and/or messages with sexist, racist, religious, or otherwise obvious defamatory remarks."
Calling someone a bigot is clearly defamatory, even if that person really is a bigot. I have reported this post.

LinuxIsTheft You're not even good at name calling, although you've been practicing it here quite frequently as of late. I don't care if you think i'm a crybaby, I believe namecalling is against the Terms of Use. If it is not, and nothing is done about you doing it, I will disappear from here because I have no desire to participate in such a low form of discussion.

#11 "But you and you foul mouthed Slashdot brethren seem to think so ... "
Not quite sure what Slashdot has to do with any of this, but you're well reknowned for bringing in random things. Had to break it to you but there is as much a single voice of Slashdot as there is a single voice of ActiveWin. Sure there may be a greater majority that think a certain way, but there is in no way a single voice. Furthermore it's really not my prerogative to go and change anyone's view on Slashdot especially given that the majority there are already against software patents, and that goes for Microsoft, IBM, RedHat etc.
"foul mouthed bigot"
You know, for someone that goes around calling others foul mouthed, you sure are a hypocrite!
#14 Don't worry about Parkker, all children react the same way.

"I also find it amusing that OSS zealots like yourself, who come here to disparage Microsoft products and users of Microsoft products"
I don't come here to disparage users of Microsoft products nor users of Microsoft products. I am myself a user of Microsoft products. However I do not EXCLUSLIVELY use microsoft products nor am i an MS apologist. So when people here disparage open source, which i ALSO use then i defend it.
The fact that you point out "other's" foul mouths to justify your own further illustrates how childish you are. Tit for Tat now?
"Act civilized and I will be polite"
We all know that this is a straight up lie. Maybe you just don't know the meaning of the word "polite". Your name, LinuxIsTheft in fact is the very FIRST indicator of the fact that you are not a polite person.
"Although I admit to getting frustrated with your name calling and whining when I politely point out obvious truths like the fact that 25% of the code in Firefox has a 1999 or 1998 copyright."
I was not name calling, YOU were. You were NOT polite in your claims. And your supposed FACT is nothing more than a disproven claim.
FACT: You are not polite on activewin especially when someone disagrees with you
FACT: You resort to childish name calling
FACT: You justify your childish name calling behaviour by pointing out others name calling (tit for tat)
