Microsoft expects heavy adoption of 64-bit Windows XP | |

Well, Windows XP Professional 64-bit edition should be with us soon, and Microsoft is already counting their chickens before they hatch. Microsoft believes that "millions" of users will make the switch to the new desktop OS within the first year after release. The hardware world is prepared in some sense for this arrival. AMD have had a 64-bit presence in the chip world for about two years now, and Intel will soon catch up. If Microsoft keep their promise and release the new OS during the first half of this year, there will certainly be processors to crunch that 64-bit code. | ||

| They'll be in for a surprise then. I doubt that a lot of people are just going to go out and buy an x64 system just because MS says they should. I just bought a new box last week and it was an x32 3.2 GHz P4. I really don't expect much from the 64-bit space for at least 3-4 years. |

| Well, sure, there'll be heavy adoption now that x64 Intel chips are available. I can't help but read behind the lines here and imagine that MS didn't expect adequate adoption when AMD had the only x64 chip. I can't see the release of x64 versions of XP and Server 2003 a month after x64 Intel chips are released as being a mere coincidence. Yes, I'm admittedly a bitter AMD fan. If I weren't also a MS fan, I'd suspect collusion between MS and Intel in order to boost Intel sales through coincidental release :/. Ok, ok... I'm just bitter, period. This should've been ready a year ago, at least, though. |
