Bugs delay AOL Netscape beta | |

Release set back a week or two. AOL is delaying the release of its new Netscape browser to fix some last-minute bugs, the company has said. The beta version of Netscape 8 was due to be available tomorrow, but that date will slip by a week or two, an AOL spokesman said. An early version of the browser seen late last month continually crashed. The new browser is designed to protect users from scams and malicious code while surfing the Web. It includes a feature that adjusts the browser security settings based on a list of known malicious websites to protect users from phishing scams. AOL is hoping to steal some of Internet Explorer market share by drawing attention to its poor security record. And it hopes to piggyback on the popularity of Firefox, the open source Web browser released in November that has been downloaded over 25 million times. | ||

| “AOL is hoping to steal some of Internet Explorer market share by drawing attention to its poor security record.” This is a strange statement coming from AOL. Isn’t AOL using Internet Explorer as part of its current software? If they are confident of Netscape 8 it should become AOL’s browser instead of Internet Explorer. |

| That statement isn't coming from AOL, rather it's coming from the writer of the piece for Techworld.com who is obviously coming up with that statement from his own observations. It's not necessarily the line that AOL thinks though. |

Testman, it stills begs the question, after all this time and $10 billion dollars (for the purchase of Netscape) why is AOL still using IE? The answer must be that in their estimation, it is the best browser and the most attractive to their customer base.
In other words, AOL, why bother? |
