Microsoft Seeks a Way Out of the Internet Explorer Corner | |

Microsoft really backed itself into a corner with Internet Explorer (IE) by holding onto its claim that its browser is an inextricable part of the Windows operating system. The Redmondians have been sorely lacking a compelling story to tell users who are unhappy with the constant barrage of IE security flaws and who are actively seeking IE alternatives. The current line — wait until Longhorn in 2006 — just doesn't cut it. Now, it turns out Microsoft isn't quite as naïve as we thought. Company officials are discussing with partners ways that Microsoft might update IE before Longhorn. We're betting we'll see one or more IE add-ons, delivered via Windows Marketplace, sooner rather than later. | ||

| They can have it both ways. IE can be an integral part of the operating system, and they can update it as well. If they don't update it until Longhorn, and don't provide a backwards compatible update that also runs on XP and Windows2003, then I have to say that IE is dead as a development platform. It is already way too long in the tooth. |

Hmm... Windows XP SP2 included substantial upgrades to IE. Like say a pop-up blocker, etc.
The next version of IE is likely going to be more standards compliant. Microsoft is pushing this heavily with .NET 2.0... the next version of ASP.NET will generate 100% compliant HTML. Given that Firefox has limited market penetration and slow growth, if Microsoft can release an update to IE by end of 2005, or early 2006... it's doubtful they will lose much. |
