Microsoft Plots Fixes to IE Browser | |

Microsoft Corp. recently held a secret Webcast with some of its closest partners to discuss ways in which the company might improve its Internet Explorer browser and customer confidence in the platform. Sources said Microsoft officials discussed potential "fixes" to IE as the company is losing market share to other browsers, such as the open-source Firefox. Though the strategy is still in its initial phases, Microsoft is looking to resolve some fundamental issues with IE's operating system. Officials for the Redmond, Wash., company said they will not upgrade the browser before the next release of Windows, dubbed Longhorn, which will only increase pressure from Firefox and further erode confidence due to security issues, sources said. | ||

| Becuase its all a game. If Firefox increases useage than IE can remain bundled and part of the OS because there is now a major competitor. MS doesn't care about losing browser share even if they lost 20% to Firefox and the alternates thay will still have 80% and MS knows that some people will still use IE no matter what. Its a lose/win situation for MS. Letting the other browers catch up begins to even everything out and then MS can continue to do what it wants. |

We should spend more time making the Web better. It is like saying there are too many accidents on the roads with cars, so let's go back to riding donkeys.
He's creating the analogy that browsers are to smart clients as cars are to donkeys??? More like the other way around. I've dealt with far too many clunky, kludgy web apps that were formally "fat clients" and that dramatically reduced productivity to buy into that. |

i recall a comment i made some time back re. firefox. this confirms it.
ms is plenty worried about firefox and google for that matter. make no mistake about it. the real problem is that ms at present can’t generate any real buzz about anything it’s currently doing! firefox has buzz. google has buzz. ms has fizz. if you doubt that look at the stock price of ms since the release of windows xp. don’t bother, i’ll tell you, its flat. actually thinking about dumping it about now. i think ms is in big trouble. maybe it can re-right itself again because it’s a well run company and still has a monopoly position for two of its products. but ms right now seems tapped out for innovation and ultimately its still all about innovation. |

#8, the stock is not a rocket because like all publicly traded companies it is all about earnings per share and the estimates above or below actual projections - too much deviation in either direction is bad. MS is a huge company, posting huge numbers. To move a stock price at that level of play, they have to perform at levels equal to the price x the number of shares out inclusive of the added revenue and savings.
The number of shares MS has is equally huge - really, really huge - as they mature, a stable stock price and positive earnings per share, regardless of price, is a very good thing. So good in fact that their recent special dividend [not all pay dividends on held shares - in fact, most do not], raised the national economy considerably. Comparing this mature company with badly over-valued and less mature stocks is not good math. That value is far more dependent upon the general trends in the economy and the markets - which have always trended upward. Buzz in this space is bad - buzz of any kind. Like the faith [non-speci] based markets themselves, banks, the reserve system and analysts simply want to know that big ole MS is still there and still meeting its numbers. They are and very likely will continue to do so. I'd be a lot more interested in what MS does with its continually growing cash pile - recommending a slew of constant, rapid, but smaller acquisitions of key companies it needs to feed its channels - exactly what I assess it is doing. |
