It’s time to get on the 64-bit bandwagon, and I don’t mean Intel Itanium’s either (of which its development partner, HP, has jumped off after the processor family’s years of miserable sales). I’m talking about x64, or what Intel calls EM64T and AMD calls AMD64. Call it whatever you want, your next computer will be 64-bit. The x64 architecture basically builds on the x86 32-bit architecture we’ve been using since, what, 1988? That means x64 processors natively understand and run 32-bit code as if those applications were running on pure 32-bit machines. This means they won’t be running in slow emulation mode (like the WOW64 emulation layer implemented by 64-bit Windows for Itanium processors). In fact, AMD Athlon 64 chips have been currying around under your nose running 32-bit Windows for years now. | ||

What crap. My next machine, which I'll probably pick up in a week or two, will be a 3.2 GHz 32-bit system. I see no reason to accept lower performance in exchange for being able to address a larger memory pool that Windows doesn't even use. 64-bit is all marketing hype at this early stage.

| #2: I don't remember where it was (HardOCP, Ars Technica, Tom's..?) where they recently benched a few Athlon64s versus Intel 3+ GHz P4s and the Athlon performance was lesser than the P4 for equivalently priced chips. 64-bits mean nothing to 99.99% of desktop users out there. Multi-core CPUs promise more bang for the consumer than 64-bit addressing. |

x64 also means double the available general purpose registers and (for AMD CPUs) lower latencies for memory accesses.
For another benchmark, Microsoft's Windows build labs reportedly cut their build times down to 1/3 of what they were under 32-bit after switching to 64-bit Opterons. "At Microsoft, I’m told that we’ve switched to using x64 machines to compile our Windows operating systems, and the effects have been stunning. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 took 9 hours to compile on x86 machines, but just 3 hours on x64s.
